If you decide to go with a cat go and visit a rescue shelter first. Oreo is a rescue in that her mother was removed from a horribly abusive home with her newest litter of kittens. I wouldn't be concerned about taking in a fully grown rescue cat as long as it accepted you during initial greetings.
