Minimum sentences are a reaction to the revolving door which prison systems have become in many cases. Too many times criminals are released prematurely only to go commit more crimes.

Should this guy have been given this sentence? Of course not, but there was no provision for the judge to make an exception. Now the legislature needs to tweek the law to make some provision for such cases, but that doesn't mean the law is bad. It means the electorate needs to elect better candidates to office and not just vote for the name next to the D,R or I.

You get life for possession in one state and can legally smoke on the street in another. It is pretty fucked up.
