Ah, now, I have never read anything by him. I take it you would recommend him?

I would indeed. Probably recommend starting with "Blindness", about an entire country that is afflicted by a disease which causes blindness. Hints of Cormack McCarthy's "The Road" and Golding's "Lord of the Flies", and a touch of magic realism.

I started that, but never finished. It was part of my "Nobel laureate" project. Most successful was José Saramago; I think I've read everything translated into English.

the only work of his i read was "the cave", was not very impressed.

may try another some day, but not very motivated to try

Those are two pretty heavyweight comparisons, and I love them both dearly. Thank you - I shall try.

Well he was a Nobel laureate, so I think the comparison is not in a different weight class.

My other favourite discovery from the Nobel list is Orhan Pamuk. But as has been often said, Nobel prizes are a mixed bag. Couldn't get into Laxness, Herta Mueller was a bit of a chore, Imré Kertéz was tough, but ultimately worth it, Elfrida Jelinek I actively loathe.

It's windy and we have a frost advisory for this night, but spring warmth will soon be here.
