One only has to look at the words of the founders themselves, read through the Federalist Papers, and the debates in the states when the 2nd Amendment was proposed.

Hint: that "well trained militia" bit gets mentioned fucking constantly, along with the need to maintain such well trained militias in lieu of a large standing army which (in the view of the founders) was nearly always used by the government to quash dissent among the populace. The right to keep and bear arms was meant to keep the government from outlawing and disbanding the "well regulated militia" which they saw as "being necessary to the security of a free State".
