Point is for once Trump didn't actually say anything outrageous, despite the low attention to detail koolaid drinkers out there attempt to spin otherwise.

He did for the hypocritical "right-to-life" leaders and mainstream groups.
They don't want to punish women (so they say), only the doctors.
They know if they campaign on punishing women too then they will have little backing. They claim that "women have suffered enough" by whatever drove them to seek an abortion so they only want to make abortion illegal to save babies and women.

The thing is, they claim abortion is murder, but supposedly, at least they would have us believe, contracting someone to murder a "baby" should not be against the law. Only contracting to murder people after they are born.

So now Trump has said one thing I agree with, at least his initial statement. Be consistent in application of law. If Contracting for murder is illegal, it's illegal, no exceptions.

Trump's inexperience led him to make a classic gaffe, defined as saying something true that one is nonetheless never supposed to admit.

You can see he was following a logical train of thought:

1. I believe, or am pretending (as Reagan did) for the purposes of trying to get the Republican presidential nomination to believe, that abortion is murder.

2. Murder is something we punish.

3. Therefore, people who obtain abortions should be punished.


The problem here is that there's insufficient political support for the idea of imprisoning (or worse) women who have abortions -- because hardly anyone REALLY believes that aborting an embryo at 8 weeks is the exact same thing morally as shooting the guy who lives next door. So pro-lifers have had to work their way around this inconsistency for decades. Trump, new to politics and by all accounts a pro-lifer for only a very short time, did not know how the game is played.
