What! He's going to honor a Campaign Promise? After seven years of fuck around the President is going to do something about the stain on American human rights that GW promoted.

FINALLY! Obama announces plan to close down Guantanamo prison

“Fifteen years after 9/11,” President Obama announced, “fifteen years after the worst terrorist attack in American history, we’re still having to defend the existence of a facility and a process where not a single verdict has been reached in those attacks.” He also said that the plan has not been easy and that if it had been the prison would have closed years ago as he had hoped.

The Pentagon released a full report detailing 13 potential sites for transferring the suspected terrorists, but the President and the Pentagon will not confirm specific locations.

About fucking time.

Damn! So where is Trump going to put the legions of Mexican rapists?

Well, he did try earlier. It's not something he can get done all by himself.

McConnell: Obama's Gitmo plan is 'illegal'

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell warned Tuesday that President Obama's plan to close the Guantanamo Bay prison facility and transfer detainees to the United States is illegal.

"Congress has acted over and over again in a bipartisan way to reject the president's plan to transfer terrorists to the United States," said McConnell, R-Ky., on the Senate floor. "It would be illegal to transfer foreign terrorists at Guantanamo into the United States."

McConnell's said senators will "review the president's plans," but since it involves transferring prisoners to the U.S., "he should know the bipartisan will of Congress has already been expressed against that proposal."

Mitch didn't bitch about the illegality of holding them in the first place, why start worrying about that now? I think Fort Knox would be a good place to move them.

As I posted and the quote from McConnell confirms, it's a campaign promise Obama has been trying to fulfill against opposition.

2009, 2013, 2016 seems like a cycle. We'll see if Paul Ryan and the the teahadists play ball. I doubt they will. Gotta give Obama credit for taking another crack at it.

So when is Mitch going to create legislation to deal with the prison that was established by Presidential fiat? Where is the legislation to fund the prison?

Why does Obama put up with the insubordination of his Military Tribunal System? I mean many of the guys in Gitmo have been cleared for release, but haven't been? What the fuck is that?

Why does the CinC not have the balls to tell the Military to get on with their goddamn tribunals and quit fucking around? They either have a case or they don't?

Well, because there's no win in anything that's done, and it isn't a situation made by the current administration. The only near draw is to keep spinning it out (or a natural disaster that conveniently wipes them all out). There are lots of situations in the international arena that don't have an elegant or even a satisfactory option. This is one of them. Duh.

It's certainly not in our interest to release any of them. It's all a waiting game and a political hot potato. And to some extent it's smoke and mirrors, because, (shh, don't tell anyone, but this isn't the only place we have terrorist suspects salted away outside of the United States and on ice).

SO is that why the Neo-Cons are not up against the wall? Because there are even more egregious human right offenses hidden in some godforsaken shit hole by Obama, the Great One?

Don't be stupid. Those guys were salted there before Obama came into office. He was just left with the mess.

So he's not a Human Right abuser because he just inherited it and is incompetent to end the abuse of human rights and breaking the rule of law? Interesting.

So do you have knowledge of places where these crimes against humanity are being continued? Or are you just bull shitting like always? :)

They will just transfer detainees to Oman or somewhere. I doubt any suspected terrorists will be brought to the US. Sent for further interrogation in some fascist shithole or be readied to be released in some sort of exchange in the ME.

Or are you just bull shitting like always? :)

Obviously there's no reason for me to continue engaging with any discussion with you on this then, is there? You're dazzled by your own perceived brilliance --as always.

You always quit when you're loosing.

You don't even deny that you would be an accomplice to breaking International Law if you knew of some of these 'dark detention centers' and did nothing to alleviate them do you?

Colin Powell Says Closing Guantanamo Bay in America's 'Best Interest'

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell is siding with President Barack Obama when it comes to closing the Guantanamo Bay detention center, arguing Wednesday that shutting it down is in the "best interest" of the nation.

"Do we really need to keep this place open for 50 remaining detainees who we can easily move to a secure facility in the United States?" Powell asked on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports."

"I think it's in the best interest in the nation and it's in the best interest in our moral authority around the world," he added.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday said that Republicans are taking legal steps to prevent the White House from closing the U.S. prison facility in Cuba — a plan announced by the administration Tuesday.
Lawmakers have the votes to block Obama's proposal in Congress and enough votes to override any veto, Ryan told reporters. Separately, the Wisconsin Republican said the GOP is "preparing our legal challenge" to ensure the prison remains open and detainees aren't moved to the U.S.

So pass a bill that makes it legal to hold people with only an unsubstantiated allegation, or a fair trial forever, Paul baby. Come on you can do it.

Better place

For the prisoners would be either Wake or Johnson Island. It's been about 70 years since we used those for nuclear test sites. They shouldn't be too radioactive now.

The problem is that it costs about $200 Million a year to keep the prison open for ~100 prisoners that we will never let go. Why not cap them, fed them to the sharks and spend the money on deficit rather than pouring it down a rat hole because Obama and Bush didn't have the guts to just execute them in the first place?

Why go through the charade of Military Tribunals if they have no rights or protection under US or International law?

Since Congress didn't declare war on anyone how can they be illegal combatants? It could be said that they were patriotic freedom fighters, a militia that took up arms to expel foreign invaders.

Why dance around the issue? If we're going to act like world dictators, why not just do what dictators do?

Gitmo shows that you already do.

Those there have not had the allegations against them tested in a court of law. In any Western country they should have been released as soon as it was clear there was insufficent evidence. Habeus Corpus should apply.

big deal and it will not close. Obama doesn't have the support. Obama is desperate for attention

You are probably right. Guantanomo should never have been used to imprison suspects but closing it is beyond US politicians' capability.

Exactly Ogg. A lot of the inmates were shopped to the CIA by the Afghanis for money. No proof, no indictment, just go to prison and chalk up another 'terrorist' for our 'hero's in the black suits.

And for what? Waterboarding Mitch McConnell would have gotten us more intelligence than we got from any of them.

Kansas Republican: Military leaders have constitutional obligation to disobey Obama order to close Gitmo

Now the Rthug's are advocating Military insurrection! For Fuck's Sake! Where is the FBI when you really need them?

Kansas Republican suggested military leaders could simply disobey orders from their commander in chief to transfer detainees from the Guantanamo Bay prison.

Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) was among a handful of GOP lawmakers who sent a letter last year urging the Joint Chiefs of Staff to “seek appropriate legal advice” before following any executive orders by President Barack Obama to close the prison, reported Right Wing Watch.

Pompeo appeared Wednesday on Newsmax TV, where he said he wasn’t sure military leaders would comply with Obama’s plan to shut down the notorious facility.

“The men and women of our military who he would ask to carry out that mission would have to look very carefully at whether the direction that they were being given was consistent with what their counsel was telling them about what was legal,” Pompeo said. “I hope the president won’t put anybody in that position and won’t present risk to America, but we’ve watched the president behave in lawless ways.”

The real risk to America is giving this asshat any coverage at all.

We need to keep it open so that we can move Obama and family there
