Here you go, James: 'Our Sunshine' by Robert Drewe. I've read it about once a year every year since 1993 (?)

I read it 3 times already. Its a raw nightmare.

I'm a fan of McCarthy, and Blood Meridian is perhaps the McCarthiest of all his works. That's not absolutely positive.

It's an original work, brutal without being the least bit sensational. I think the judge is one of the greatest characters in fiction. And this novel is basically the gold standard on well-researched. It's a little bit of truth sold at retail price.

Having said that, it's one of the least accessible and least enjoyable books I've ever read. The language and style are purposely obtuse, and the emotionless "guide-style" of the narrative makes any sort of connection or investment almost impossible. In most of the ways that a story is traditionally judged, it is an outright failure.

It is a "great" work, but is it a good one?

I read it periodically because there is no other novel that conflicts me more. I also couldn't attempt to write it in a hundred years. It is beyond me in a way that is past humbling. I still might hate it.

Ghoul by Michael Slade a horror.detective style novel, I think you'd like it, has one of those endings like sixth sense, makes you say, no way, then you have to go back and look and the clues are everywhere.

But scratch that....amazon does not have a kindle edition for some reason, only some hard to find paperback versions. Nice to know my first printing could fetch that price

Here's one I read in my early teens and enjoyed a horror/mystery. The Eyes of Darkness this was posted under Leigh Nichols which of course turned out to be Dean Koontz.

You should also check out Phantoms by Koontz a horror novel that will keep you guessing all the way through

The writing fascinates me, and the style is what I strive for with my own wares. For gore its good gore.

Since you asked try this one; On the Far Side of Darkness.

It's a collection of short stories and novellas centred around Georges Belleveau, a vampire since just before The Terror and Diane Patterson, his lover.

One of the stories won the Halloween contest here at Lit quite some time ago.

The reviews have been mixed. I played with the vampire mythos in non-standard ways. No Lestats or Edward Cullens here. One reviewer accused me of homophobia and racism because in a couple of stories the antagonists were not straight, white males.

I bought 4 Kindle books today: CINDERELLA SIMS by Lawrence Block, THE NARROWS by Michael Connelly, SOME KIND OF DAME by Jim Thompson, and CROSSING THE LINE by Lovecraft.

Lovecraft recommended others but his books are too fuggin long for my 2" brain, so I bought one with 240 pages NOT 800. I'll buy more in the future cuz its a good idea to support LIT writers. I deleted like 11 erotica I bought from Amazon.

Send me your best. I'll read almost anything, I don't care if the plot is older and as worn out as me, but I want quality craftsmanship. Like, I had eggs, hash browns, white toast, and bacon for breakfast....available anywhere....but not prepared equally.
