Cut The "GOD" Crap!!!

Everybody always thinks they know with absolute certainty the answer to an totally unanswerable question. Not a whole lot of difference between an Orthodox Jew and an atheist when it comes to that. Both are being assholes.

People still insist that if you can't disprove something then it must be true.
Can't be proven, can't be disproven then let it go and wait and see. Fighting about it is dumb.

He made some good points, actually.

I don't know what religious wackoes must be in the States. I don't live there.

Baptists.

A few Fundamentalists cults.

Jehova's Witnesses

Plus all the majors, Catholics, Mormons, Jews, etc.

I don't much care for the Amish or their ilk, but at least they keep to themselves.

Wow…
When I first moved overseas -to a smaller town in New Zealand- I was shocked to see about 6 churches of different faiths, lined up on the same street. And religion was so comercialized (in certain circles, not all of course). But my parents told me that the same bug has started to infect Europe too.

Its' worse than you can imagine. Churches and their property are tax exempt at all levels, Federal, State and Local. There are medium sized cities that are suffering financially due to the tax bases loss because there are so many churches on what would be prime retail/business locations. In some Bible belt towns, you have big churches on all four corners of an intersection.

Get into the bigger inner cities and even some suburban and rural locations and they infest old storefronts that used to be taxable properties. On a 20 mile drive into town, I can count about 20 churches of one size or another along the way. And we only have about 10,000 people in this rural county.

Religion's demise is the result of imposters administering churches. Clerics, once upon a time, had to do missionary work like Albert Schweitzer did in Africa.

I don't think that has fuck all to do with it because the church has been full of impostors since day 1. I think it's their lack of power for modern government.

I think if guys with funny hats and robes were running around with goon squads crucifying heretics and fornicators dark ages style I think religion would INSTANTLY become FAR more prevalent and important to EVERYBODY. :D

You are exactly right Sparky. You can't prove a negative.

The first point being that those that assert there "is no God" are taking it on just as much faith as those that assert there is a God.

A second point is that the OP, and many respondents, equate religion with God. The two are NOT mutually inclusive. While almost all religions claim a kinship with a God or Gods, if a God or Gods do exist they not necessarily claim a kinship with any particular religion.

Google "ontological argument".

A religion generally requires an unwavering belief in a higher power, i.e. God, Allah, Teh Free Market, etc.

Not sure what your point is here.

Which should be the difference between religions and cults where you have a physical, present 'leader' like Jim Jones, David Koresh, et al.

Unfortunately that line is blurred by the likes of Dollar, Swaggart, Graham, Bagdadhi, The Ayatollah, The Pope ......

I've heard it argued that human essentials shouldn't be taxed, so there are tax breaks for groceries, clothing, medical needs and housing. If you regard the communion of souls as a human essential, then houses of worship should also not be taxed.

I don't agree with it, but that's the rationale.

Ummm .... property taxes don't ring a bell? Ding-ding-ding?

And most clothing is taxed in stores.

Don't answer my question. But you have too much steam for a chronic nuisance. That says to me your issue isn't Jesus in particular but something else related to morality or a kindred soul. That makes you a phony.

How about separation of church and state? As soon as churches are taxed there will be unfair application of the laws/rules governing the taxation. That's just the way taxes work.

Why the rage over something you could simply ignore? Seems you have some other issues going on there. :)

My guess is she got caught fucking her brother in law, and her sister is pissed and flinging scriptures at her. So she's mad at baby Jesus cuz she's a slut.

There. Fixed that for you.

Yes, a lot of hateful people, who would be hateful whatever they did or didn't believe, like to use it as justification for their hate.

But say if someone loses a child, or a parent, or is fighting cancer, if the only comfort they have is the belief that their loved one is safe with god, stops the grief from being unbearable... then only an inhuman fuckwit would ever try to take that from them.
So true.
Chris Hedges' article outlines another good pro-religion (the traditional teachings, not to be confused with the current institutions) argument :
After Religion Fizzles, We’re Stuck With Nietzsche
By Chris Hedges

"1.The religious institutions are in irreversible decline. They are ruled by moral and intellectual trolls. Their sins are many.
- The essential teachings of the monotheistic traditions are now lost.
The Christian right, which peddles magical thinking and a Jesus-as-warrior philosophy, hijacked the language and iconography of traditional Christianity. The obsession with personal piety and “How-is-it-with-me?” spirituality that permeates most congregations is narcissism.

I do not attend church. The cloying, feel-your-pain language of the average clergy member makes me run for the door. It makes no difference to me if Jesus existed or not. There is no historical evidence that he did.
The Bible works only as metaphor.

2.But I cannot rejoice in the collapse of these institutions. We are not going to be saved by faith in reason, science and technology. As we devolve into a commodity culture, in which celebrity, power and money reign, the older, dimming values of another era are being replaced.
- We are becoming objects and marketable commodities. We have no intrinsic value.. We are obsessed with self-presentation . Success, as Goldman Sachs illustrates, is its own morality. Other people’s humiliation, pain and weakness become the fodder for popular entertainment.

The great religious thinkers were our first ethicists.
The great religions set free the critical powers of humankind. They broke with the older Greek and Roman traditions that gods and Destiny ruled human fate—a belief that, when challenged by Socrates, saw him condemned to death. They challenged the power of the tribe, the closed society. They offered up the possibility that human beings, although limited by circumstance and human weakness, could shape and give direction to society and their own lives."

That's it! Morality is correct behavior or optimal behavior. Religious leaders are often corrupt and evil but correct behavior is a noble endeavor.
