Was Zika outbreak caused by release of genetically modified mosquitoes in Brazil?

The Aedes aegypti mosquito sub-species that carries both the Zika virus and dengue was the type targeted with genetically modified mosquitoes.
The aim was to release only male Aedes mosquitoes into the wild and they would in turn produce offspring with their virus carrying female counterparts.
This offspring would then die off before breeding age due to the GM coding in their genes.
But experts expressed concerns about the programme at the time of its inception, arguing that further studies were needed on the potential consequences.

Your own link states that prior to 2015 Zika was in Africa.

Full Definition of outbreak

1
a : a sudden or violent increase in activity or currency <the outbreak of war> b : a sudden rise in the incidence of a disease <an outbreak of measles> c : a sudden increase in numbers of a harmful organism and especially an insect within a particular area <an outbreak of locusts>

It was still in Africa BEFORE it was in Brazil, therefore highly unlikely a genetic mutant mosquito that introduced it.
More likely is that it will turn out to be transmissable either sexually, or through mosquito bites from an infected person.

You're pretty dense aren't you?

It is very possible the virus was brought in from Africa for the world cup and an efficient transmitter was encountered in Brazil.

At this point though, your speculation might be post hoc ergo propter hoc.

Not to start a confrontation...

"Zika" is a great name for a deadly virus....much friendlier sounding than Ebola or AIDS.

Why would they change the method? The Sterile Insect Technique of vector control is not new.
Releasing sterile male insects, including mosquitoes, has been around for over 40 years. They've been doing it since the 70's.
I think maybe the mother of the person who wrote the article for the Mirror had Zika while she was pregnant.

Was it man-made?

Let me put it this way - once, a while ago now, I got a personal invitation to attend Davos (this is completely true btw, and, I was aked to pay $10,000 of the usual back then $15,000 attendance fee). And associate of mine did go and I just didn't see the point.

Another fact that you ought to stick into your calculations although I realise there are a bunch of idiots who just plain don't know when to shut up when someone is TELLING THEM SOMETHING...!

Barbara Hutchinson was my mother's best friend during the late Fifties and Sixties and the twins stayed at our home during their gap year.

Barbara Hutchinson was one of the latest main Rothschild's wives.

Is the current Zika virus outbreak for which they are 'working on a vaccine' man-made...?

I don't know. What do you suppose.

WTF?
And why is "working on a vaccine" in quotes?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zika_virus

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a member of the Flaviviridae virus family and the Flavivirus genus, transmitted by daytime-active Aedes mosquitoes, such as A. aegypti.

In humans, the virus causes a mild illness known as Zika fever, Zika, or Zika disease, which since the 1950s has been known to occur within a narrow equatorial belt from Africa to Asia. In 2014, the virus spread eastward across the Pacific Ocean to French Polynesia, then to Easter Island and in 2015 to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America, where the Zika outbreak has reached pandemic levels

The virus was first isolated in April 1947 from a rhesus macaque monkey that had been placed in a cage in the Zika Forest of Uganda, near Lake Victoria, by the scientists of the Yellow Fever Research Institute. A second isolation from the mosquito A. africanus followed at the same site in January 1948. When the monkey developed a fever, researchers isolated from its serum a transmissible agent that was first described as Zika virus in 1952. In 1968, it was isolated for the first time from humans in Nigeria.[18] From 1951 through 1981, evidence of human infection was reported from other African countries such as the Central African Republic, Egypt, Gabon, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Uganda, as well as in parts of Asia including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The global distribution of the most cited carrier of Zika virus, A. aegypti, is expanding due to global trade and travel. A. aegypti distribution is now the most extensive ever recorded – across all continents including North America and even the European periphery. A mosquito population capable of carrying the Zika virus has been found in a Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and genetic evidence suggests they survived at least the last four winters in the region.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zika_virus_outbreak_in_the_Americas_(2015–present)

In January 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that the virus was likely to spread throughout the majority of the Americas by the end of the year. The virus is mainly spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is commonly found throughout the the tropical and subtropical Americas, but also Aedes albopictus that now have become widespread up to the Great Lakes area of the United States.

In around one in five cases, infection with Zika virus results in a minor illness known as Zika fever, which causes symptoms such as fever and a rash. Zika virus infection in pregnant women has a suspected link with newborn microcephaly by mother-to-child transmission.

In January 2016 it was announced that in response to the Zika virus outbreak, Brazil's National Biosafety Committee approved the releases of more genetically modified Aedes aegypti mosquitos throughout their country. Previously in July 2015, Oxitec published results of a test in the Juazeiro region of Brazil, of so-called "self-limiting" mosquitoes, to fight dengue, Chikungunya and Zika viruses. They concluded that mosquito populations were reduced by over 90% in the test region. Male genetically modified mosquitoes mate with females in the wild and transmit a self-limiting gene that causes the resulting offspring to die before reaching adulthood and thus diminishes the local mosquito population

Please don't point out anything factual.... the nutjobs want to believe the #greatZikaconspiracy

None of that story made any sense nor was it grammatically correct.

Finally, it's complete bullshit because:

1. you don't attend "Davos". You attend The World Economic Forum Annual Meeting at Davos.

2. You have to be a member of the World Economic Forum and pay an annual membership AND then you have to buy a ticket. The price of the most basic membership level (which allows you to buy one ticket) was $52,000. The ticket was an additional $19,000. This is all before taxes. Oh and these are the 2012 prices.

So yeah, I wouldn't believe shit that comes out of this guy's mouth or fingers.

The OUTBREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The rapid increase in the rate of transmission. The implied theory in the article is that the releasing of genetically modified mosquitoes to reduce the amount of mosquitoes that could potentially transmit the EXISTING virus failed and may have actually allowed more mosquitoes to reproduce.

That's the implied theory. I have no idea if it is correct. The increase in transmission could just as easily be due to el nino favoring the breeding of mosquitoes.

Brains people.

Use them.

A good conspiracy theory needs to be at least plausible.
So what's the plausible reason for changing a process from one that is known to work well with no risk to an experimental one.

One risk is the sterile male method is so effective that there are concerns that the diseases are so well reduced that people will loose any natural immunity.

I read that the other day. First Africanized (Killer) Bees and now GM mosquitoes. We have a lot to thank Brazil for.
