In the UK, if someone breaks into your home, you call someone that doesn't have a gun who tells you they'll be there when the burglar has left.
If you tell them that you shot the burglar, they get there in 3 minutes with a 20 man armed response unit and a helicopter.

So different from the other side of the globe.
When I was living in NZ, I called Police for advice regarding a strange man who was hanging around the house. Instead of advice over the phone, they just popped in an hour later and took all the details & then kept an eye on it. But that was a smaller town, and large cities are much different in terms of Police staffing and crime level.

If someone breaks into your home. You beat them with a baseball bat because they don't have a gun either. Then you call the police (who have guns, the only ones who really should). That is how it is done in civilized countries. Or get a dog. Burglars don't like noisy dogs. Or an alarm system with a panic button and a loud siren. Or lock bedroom door, call police and call insurance company after. Keep outside lights on. That is best bet to deter bad guys.
No one need die over a big screen TV.
If you really feel the need to own a gun for home protection. Get a simple shotgun. Custom light loads which will not penetrate interior walls and kill sleeping children in your home or the neighbours next door.

Handguns are illegal in Canada and it is very rare that common burglars have them. If you are a drug dealer you may be robbed by those with guns.
A burglar can just as easily brain you with a crowbar as you sleep as shoot you with a nine.
If you can afford the hundreds of dollars needed to procure a handgun. You don't need to burglarize homes.

Criminals are not civilized. It's foolish to assume they are or that they follow any sort of logic. They are criminals, it's what they do. To many people it makes perfect sense to pay hundreds for a gun so they can rob someone for $50. These aren't smart people. Assuming they are will get you killed.

If I'm alone, I want to use my cross bow rather than a gun. It would be more fun.
If my wife is in the house, I won't play around and take chances and use a gun.
Either way I'm just going to shoot them in the leg and sit back and watch my two German Shepherds maul him to death.

Criminals are stupid. They would spend every cent on crack first before buying a gun. Like I said, you don't live in a civilized country with civilized laws do you. The law does not rule your country. Your country is obviously ruled by the gun. Probably where armed insurrection is taken as a god given right.
In my country burglars use crowbars not guns. You need high level criminal connections to buy guns and lots of cash. No Saturday night specials around here. Muggers use knives or crowbars again no guns. You can go your whole life in Canada and never see a handgun. I saw my first one in the armed forces. The next was just 5 years ago in the possession of a friend who broke many laws by bringing it up north on a fishing trip. Possibly not even a shotgun or rifle if you live in a city and don't have hunter friends. Except in cops holsters or on the boob tube.
That is how rare guns are in Canada to most folk. We do not have a gun culture. Guns, handguns especially are looked down on as tools of criminals and small penised wannabees.
Only in uncivilized 3rd world shitholes do guns rule and are common.
