Aussies! Check in here!

Hi there all,

Just dropping a line to say hi and introduce myself. I joined a little while ago but after I posted a couple of times I was inundated with PMs which was a tad overwhelming to start off with.
Am hoping to ease in around here and get to know you guys instead of just lurking in the background of the discussion boards.
Hope you've all had a great weekend xxx

Hey there HubbyApproves, nothing wrong with lurking, I'm a champion lurker. We're mostly harmless and chatty around here, though this thread has gotten very quiet lately.

Afternoon aussies!

First, welcome HubbyApproves.... :) we're a friendly bunch in here....

Well, today I got my stitches out. Now I'm so freakin' paranoid I'm barely moving!
Last time I had stitches in my back, when they took them out the wound split open
I made them put butterfly closures on and then cover the whole thing with a big tape dressing! Right now I have the best posture EVER!

I have suicidal fish
My pleco's keep jumping out of the one inch hole in my tank cover! Just how they manage to do this is beyond me..... they have to line themselves up pretty well to make it!

I was out for a while with my daughter today, and we went past a perfume display so I thought I'd sample a few.... let's just say that Jessica Mauboy's fragrance isn't fragrant :cattail:
Both daughter and I gagged and as soon as I came home I washed my arm off!
I did, however, find a gorgeous frangipani scent I absolutely LOVE, and because it was my late sisters favourite flower, I will be going back to get it tomorrow. (I may send some to my Mum and Spare Mum too.)

More heat on the way for us Tassie folks..... urk  Bring on autumn - my favourite season.

Scent for men that I like?
Let me put it this way....... I can home in on Davidorff's Cool Water in a crowded nightclub in 2.4 seconds!

We desperately need rain in Tassie :( Did you know, despite what most people think, Tas is the 2nd driest state in Australia (after S.A.)?
Most of the dams are around 22% atm.....

Wow, so you kinda like it then? ha ha ha

No way, really? I would have thought it would be one of the wettest...........

Yeah.... that's what we tell people so they don't want to move here. "It rains 364 days a year!" stops mainlanders coming and buying up all the houses, raising the prices (like they do elsewhere in Oz!)
You can still find a decent place in Launy for $200K.

Yesterday and today, we've had major smoke issues from the more than 80 fires burning across the state :( Apparently our bushfire plume has reached Victoria and people are calling 000 to report it over there!
This time I am far away from the fires, luckily. I don't ever want to go thro that again.

Aaah right....ha ha ha. I was going to say, every time I hear the weather forecast, it is almost always showers in Tassie.
Wow those sound like mahoosive fires you get over there. The one here a few weeks back was devastating - a whole town gone in 7 minutes!!!

Another day of awful smoke haze :(
They are warning to keep elderly and young children indoors now.
Bloody Greens and their 'don't do fuel-load burnoffs' crap! It's all their fault

In a stunning display of ineptitude, Tasmania was left off the Australia Day promotional caps sold through Woolworths stores. Or rather, recently sold through Woolworths stores.

When they said it was popular to remove your map of Tasmania...

It gets better!
Coles had to recall all their Aussie flags, because some underpaid, overworked child in China printed all the stars the wrong way round!

Melbourne relocation.

Anyone in Melbourne? Serious relocation possibility.

Good Martial Arts scene? Beaches clean? Public transportation good? Rent a 2 bedroom for under 2k? Is there rail that goes to Perth? Jobs a plenty? I have an offer, but..like to have back up...

Melbourne is a totally awesome place!
Where in Melb are you looking to live? It's a pretty spread-out city....

If this goes through...working near Chinatown and 32 highway? So haven't narrowed down where to live though. Beaches good?

Melbourne is situated in a bay, so the local beaches are so-so.
Having said that, there are beaches on the south coast that are accessable with just a couple of hours drive that are super-excellent for surfing, etc.

I'm a bit biased..... I adore Melbourne, especially St Kilda!

As far as I know decent Martial Arts scene....though I don't do it myself.

Public transport decent...depending on where you live. Myki cards can be a pain.

Not much idea about renting, but you can check out sites like realestate.com.au. As WQ said, where you choose to live makes a huge difference.

There is rail through Adelaide to Perth. Very long trip though.

Jobs-wise, it's one of the two biggest cities in Aus and shares a fair number of corporate HQs. Can be the best city for jobs depending on what sort of job.

Chinatown is in the middle of the city, but I have no idea what 32 highway is.

Thanks mate!

More like Swanston and Bourke The 32 or whatever he called it, I think is Victoria Street.

Chinatown is in the heart of the CBD, and there are plenty of apartment options. I second Green & WQ's comments...Melbourne is ace!!!

Hi there Dom, just saw your message, sorry for the slackness in replying. Nice to meet you too. I'm bracing for the craziness of the school year starting again tomorrow, how's things over there?

So that would be the corner of Little Bourke St and Elizabeth St. (Highway 32 is the Hume Hwy, which used to terminate at Flinders St Station)

Anywhere in Melbourne will give you pretty easy access to the CBD, so choose what suits you. $2000 will get you a two bed small house or apartment within a 15 min train ride from the city. Do you want quiet and leafy....go east. Do you want hipster or hippy....go north. Do you want beachy.....go south.

The best comparison I can make is an amalgam of New York and Seattle.

Good luck.

G'day Seth,

My best tip for a relocation is visit the place prior to the move and check things out for yourself after doing some research. As has already been suggested visit the Melbourne website and the local rental ones. As for rental spots not sure what $2000 gets you in Melbourne city itself it can be expensive however there are lots of choices of apartments in the city these days and all the PT will get you to the Chinatown area. There are apartments also in what is called the Docklands, plus down St.Kilda Road also if you're willing to travel a bit like the 15 mins you mentioned then don't discount places outside of the city centre like the inner suburbs, such as Kensington(has become trendy) which is westerly or around South Yarra / Windsor or St. Kilda East with is easterly. It will be cheaper to rent in one of those inner city locations rather than the city centre.

As for beaches, WQ is correct there are decent beaches close to the city centre like St. Kilda Beach (not near St. Kilda Road so don't get those two things confused) there is also South Melbourne Beach but the best swimming beaches are in the South East like Brighton, Black Rock. Can either drive or take the train from the city. If you want surf beaches then as WQ advised you will need to drive for a couple of hours south west past Geelong.

The PT in Melbourne is rather good although we locals complain a bit too much about it especially during the peak hours, but the tourists love it. We even have a free tram zone in the CBD area. The cafés and restaurants are in abundance and rather good as well. Will need to purchase a Myki card to use the PT, no cash anymore and do yourself a favour and register it in case you lose it. Will need to replace it every 4 yrs but the replacements are free as I just discovered.

If you have any other questions about Melbourne just post them here, as there are a few Melbourne locals on the thread that can provide info or point you in the right direction.

As for travelling to Perth by train...forget that idea. Its like saying you're staying in Sydney and going for a day trip to Cairns by car. Flying from Melbourne to Perth takes over 3hrs but better than two days on the train. Plus its treated as an OS flight so hot food and free booze.

Hey WQ ,

Can you guys keep the smoke down, the Tassie ferry may miss the mainland altogether in the smoke haze and end up in NZ.

Actually I had no idea the smoke drifted that far and yep those plans to not get rid of the forest floor fuel is coming back to bite all of us. I saw that there are something like 80 bushfires burning in Tassie mainly on the west coast, hopefully the cooler weather will do some good.
