I watched as you sadly informed your friends that you just couldn't seem to find the necessary time to take care of a dog since you changed jobs. It just wasn't being fair to him and you thought it best to rehome the little fella. Okay, that seemed responsible and you seemed to be looking out for the dog, I hoped you could find him a good home with people who would love him. Then...

Then today, you did the unthinkable. You let everyone know how excited you were over the NEW puppy you just picked up as the birthday present to yourself.

What?! You suddenly found the time you thought you didn't have to properly devote to a dog? Mercy!the adult, house broken dog was too time consuming but potty training a puppy won't be at all time consuming. Well, color me amazed.

It just irks me to pieces, Jezzi. People like this should never own pets. Never, no exceptions, not even a cockroach. It's all fun and games until they become a little inconvenienced, then ooopss don't have time for the pet anymore. Ridiculously selfish and irresponsible.

There's a lady who canters her horse around my neighbourhood, on the road. I'm debating whether or not to call the RCPCA, as the horse is on totally unsuitable shoes for such hard surfaces
The horse never goes anywhere else - just on the roads around here (she even goes down to the Maccas drive-through on him!)
I worry for his hooves and legs.

Maybe their personalities just didn't match, and the dog would be better off with a different owner…?

I hate people like that. I volunteer for a rescue and it happens a lot.

My neighbor was complaining that she could not train her puppy, so she was thinking of re-homing the pup through our rescue.

I told her that in the future, if she was going to get a dog, perhaps a senior dog would be better for her.

She asked if she could trade her dog, for another dog.

My grandmother got along with animals like no one ever did. People brought her crazy vicious abused dogs and theyd be licking her face in a day or two tho lethal to every other human.

I noticed that about people here, too. Whereas back home you have all sorts (some people like animals, others don't) - most people here cherish their pets. It's also funny, sometimes: no matter what area you walk into at work, most computers have pics. of cats or dogs as screensavers.

Despite campaigns, people still think a puppy is a suitable Christmas present either for a child or for a relation. They don't consider the work and cost of keeping a dog.

But the real local crisis is with horses. A horse is a very expensive animal to keep but is very cheap to buy, especially if it has problems. Health care for horses is very expensive.

During 2015 the number of abandoned seriously ill and dying horses had increased by 50% on 2014. So far in January 2016 the local RSPCA has already found more dead or dying horses than the largest monthly number recorded in 2015. The refuges for horses are full and overflowing, but most horses reported to the RSPCA are so badly neglected they are beyond saving.

The cost of keeping a horse if you have your own facilities and plenty of time time is about £25 a week. If you have to have it looked after professionally? £125 to £150 a week.

Yet you can buy a horse for less than £50. Some are even given away free.

I know… It amazes me how cheap horses are in some places. When I lived in NZ, quite a few of my colleagues had horses, and they were taken aback by my surprised reaction.
But then, the standards of living were such that a lot of houses came with a piece of (breathtaking) land. Instead of living in boxes like back home.

But - very few cases of neglected pets here; and if they are, they make the news and there's a big public uproar and upset over them.

Oh I remember, I remember the "look at the cute puppy I got my son" 3 yrs ago. I remember the 'best buddies' pics all over social media. so I sincerely thought this person who is an RN, might not have time on her new job for the dog. The new puppy shot that excuse all to hell.

I'm still disgusted with her.
