What category do I post in?

My story that I'm working on is sci-fi/fantasy, but has strong elements of bdsm, bondage, and reluctance. There are some not-totally-human characters, and a menage a trois. It's going to be my first submission. I'm still figuring things out on the site. Could someone please help me figure out which category I should post my story under? I'm not sure.

Well, it may help to know that SciFi/Fantasy has quite a generous readership who are reputed to score stories more highly than readers of some of the other Genres .

When you post your story, too, Laurel will look it over and may re-assign it to a different category. Obviously after years of reading and uploading many many stories, she does understand this quite well. She put one of my stories in Gay Male instead of Fantasy, which is the category I had chosen for it, and it did quite nicely there.

You can put the other elements of your story in as Tags.

What is the overarching category it fits in? From the sounds of it, at a glance it belongs in Sci fi/fantasy. The other stuff is what the tags are for. Maybe pop a little note at the top that there are some themes of reluctance as there's some people who do not want anything to do with that.

However, that being said, two of the best sci fi/fantasy stories I ever read (written by the same person) are firmly located in the non con category; however, the overarching themes are the reluctance, dealing with Stockholm syndrome, etc., and the sci fi/fantasy elements are merely backdrop (Or, they didn't want to deal with people getting upset, since the stories get really dark at some points; I imagine people in noncon are used to that, but you might jar someone in the sci fi category if they're not expecting it and unprepared, which is probably not going to be good for your ratings.)

TL;DR We can sorta guide ya, but you're more or less on your own in regards to figuring out where it goes. If you change your mind later you can always just have the category shifted, or the lovely admin will place it where she thinks it's best suited.

If it crosses that many categories, I'd go with Sci-Fi.

This is good advice. On this bit in particular, the tags only appear right at the end so a warning note that the story can be dark in places may save you from some anguished 1 votes and grumpy comments when people unexpectedly find it's a non-con.

Sci-fi/Fantasy used to be an old love of mine but I have not read much that way on Lit so I'm not sure what goes in that category. From your description, my first instinct would be to put it in non con/reluctance, especially if those elements are strong. Again, if only the non-con pushes it. Pop a story with that in the wrong category and readers may voice their opinion that it is.

But generally, no one in non con will bite your head off for having sci-fi/fantasy elements or non human characters in your story.
