North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un hints the country has acquired hydrogen bomb capabilities

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has hinted that his nuclear-armed state has developed a hydrogen bomb, a move that would signal a major step forward in its nuclear weapons capabilities.

During a recent inspection tour of a historical military site, Kim mentioned that North Korea was already a “powerful nuclear weapons state ready to detonate self-reliant A-bomb and H-bomb to reliably defend its sovereignty”, the North’s official KCNA news agency said on Thursday.

North Korea has already tested three atom bombs, which rely on nuclear fission.

A hydrogen, or thermonuclear device, uses fusion in a chain reaction that results in a far more powerful explosion.

It'd be a shame if one exploded prematurely.

Who will the Rethuglicans blame this on?

Oh yeah, right... Obama. Silly me.

Personal attacks on his looks...shame on you! Just because he doesn't look like the usual apes/gorilla's you hang around with doesn't make him ugly.

No, that would be great if one exploded and killed all those innocent men, women and children. Let's count each death as a carbon credit.

Why we would blame Obama...ohhh ya, he did this thing where he said he could lead our country and he is involved with this thing that unites our allies to keep us all safe...silly to blame him, he is responsible for nothing and he does nothing.

I think the idea is to have it go off deep in a research site with him on an inspection tour accompanied by all his cronies. He starves enough every year an atomic accident won't jack up the death rate that much in his country.

The Growing Threat From an EMP Attack
A nuclear device detonated above the U.S. could kill millions, and we've done almost nothing to prepare.

Recent declassification of EMP studies by the U.S. government has begun to draw attention to this dire threat. Rogue nations such as North Korea (and possibly Iran) will soon match Russia and China and have the primary ingredients for an EMP attack: simple ballistic missiles such as Scuds that could be launched from a freighter near our shores; space-launch vehicles able to loft low-earth-orbit satellites; and simple low-yield nuclear weapons that can generate gamma rays and fireballs.

In 2004, the EMP Commission met with senior Russian military personnel who warned that Russian scientists had been recruited by North Korea to help develop its nuclear arsenal as well as EMP-attack capabilities. In December 2012, the North Koreans successfully orbited a satellite, the KSM-3, compatible with the size and weight of a small nuclear warhead. The trajectory of the KSM-3 had the characteristics for delivery of a surprise nuclear EMP attack against the U.S.

What would a successful EMP attack look like? The EMP Commission, in 2008, estimated that within 12 months of a nationwide blackout, up to 90% of the U.S. population could possibly perish from starvation, disease and societal breakdown.

Surge arrestors, faraday cages and other devices that prevent EMP from damaging electronics, as well micro-grids that are inherently less susceptible to EMP, have been used by the Defense Department for more than 50 years to protect crucial military installations and strategic forces. These can be adapted to protect civilian infrastructure as well. The cost of protecting the national electric grid, according to a 2008 EMP Commission estimate, would be about $2 billion—roughly what the U.S. gives each year in foreign aid to Pakistan.

I hope and believe that eventually Communist China will take out Kim Jong-Un.

Communist China is like a former high school hoodlum who in early adulthood has somehow managed to find himself rising in a promising career. Nevertheless, he fears that his younger brother, who still is a high school hoodlum, and who does not seem to have much potential, may get him into trouble.

I do not believe that North Korea has any defensive lines against Communist China. After consulting in private with South Korea, Japan, and the United States, the Chinese Army could sweep in, take care of the problem, and set up a puppet dictatorship completely subservient to them who will not cause anyone problems.

If that does not happen a North Korean general might assassinate Kim Jong-Un. Kim Jong-Un has executed so many top officials in North Korea that the survivors must know that no one is safe.

No dictator can rule entirely be fear. There need to be people who like him enough to carry out his orders. Sooner or later those with the ability to kill Kim Jong-Un will look at each other, and think, "Hey. They hate him as much as I do."

Five years old but not a bad assessment of North and South Korean capabilities.

N. Korean subs could be nasty. Can even nuclear powered carriers protected by a battle fleet conduct air operations under submarine threat? Zig-zagging not required anymore?

Can their subs operate in the Sea of Japan? A lucky hit on a troop transport bring US soldiers from Japan would be a huge propaganda victory.

The North does appear to be set up defensively not offensively.

My guess is that the fall of Kim Jong-Un will be as sudden and violent as the end of Nicolae Ceauşescu in Romania. Whether this results in unification with South Korea, or a less evil dictatorship in the North, I cannot predict.

My hope is that those who overthrow Kim Jong-Un quickly get control of North Korea's atomic weapons. Kim Jong-Un is so unhinged that he may decide to take a lot of people with him when he dies.

Kim Jong-Un needs to father a few sons PDQ.

It is the Korean People's Army which decides who rules.

Kim Jong-nam

Kim Jong-nam (born May 10, 1971) is the eldest son of the late Kim Jong-il, former Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. From roughly 1994 to 2001, he was widely considered to be the heir apparent to his father and the next leader of North Korea. Following a much-publicized botched attempt to secretly enter Japan using a fake passport and visit Tokyo Disneyland in May 2001, he was thought to have fallen out of favor with his father. Kim Jong-nam's younger paternal half-brother Kim Jong-un was named heir apparent in September 2010. In exile, Jong-nam has become known as an occasional critic of his family's regime and an advocate for reform.

In May 2001, Kim was arrested on arrival at Narita International Airport accompanied by two women and a four-year-old boy identified as his son. He was traveling on a forged Dominican Republic passport using a Chinese alias, Pang Xiong, which means "fat bear" in Mandarin Chinese. Kim Jong-nam was reportedly wearing a white shirt and dark blazer along with sunglasses and a gold chain. After being detained for several days, he was deported, on the instructions of the Japanese government, to the People's Republic of China. Kim Jong-nam apparently told his questioners that he was in Japan to visit Tokyo Disneyland in Urayasu, near Tokyo. The incident caused Kim Jong-il to cancel a planned visit to China due to embarrassment.

Until the Tokyo incident, Kim was expected to become leader of the country after his father. In February 2003, the Korean People's Army began a propaganda campaign under the slogan "The Respected Mother is the Most Faithful and Loyal Subject to the Dear Leader Comrade Supreme Commander." Since the "Respected Mother" was described as "[devoting] herself to the personal safety of the comrade supreme commander," and "[assisting] the comrade supreme commander nearest to his body," it is assumed that the "Respected Mother" is Ko Young-hee, and that the campaign was designed to promote Kim Jong-chul or Kim Jong-un, her sons. (A similar campaign was launched in praise of Kim Jong il's mother during the later years of Kim Il-sung's life.)

It is believed that Kim Jong-un, Jong-nam's youngest half-brother, became the new heir apparent due to this incident. Since the loyalty of the Army is the real foundation of the Kim family's continuing hold on power in the DPRK, this was a serious development for Kim Jong-nam's prospects. In late 2003, it was reported that Kim Jong-nam was living in Macau, lending strength to this belief.

Kim Jong-il had four partners, and at least five children with three of them. He fathered Kim Jong-nam in 1971 with film star Song Hye-rim, and Kim Sul-song in 1974 with his first wife, Kim Young-suk. His second mistress, Ko Yong-hui, was the "de facto First Lady of North Korea". She was born in Japan to Korean parents. Their three children are Kim Jong-chul (born 1981), Kim Jong-un (born 1983), and Kim Yo-jong (born 1987).[18] He did not have children with his fourth partner, Kim Ok.

Kim Jong-un's two older brothers were considered "black sheep" of the family. Kim Jong-nam, Kim Jong-il's eldest son, fell out of favor when caught in a plot to visit Tokyo Disneyland in 2001. He has a reputation as a troublemaker within the family, and publicly stated in 2011 that North Korea should transition out of his family's dynasty. He now lives in China. The middle son, Kim Jong-chul, was reportedly not considered in succession considerations due to his unmasculine characteristics. He is also known to be reserved.

Kim Jong-un became North Korea's Supreme Leader on December 29, 2011. He married Ri Sol-ju around 2009, and reportedly had a daughter in 2012. Kim made an effort to distinguish himself from the reputations of his father and brothers, and developed an academic, masculine, and extroverted demeanor.
