When people have jobs, support themselves and their families, they realize they don't need the government in their lives running the day to day. They start to believe that government had a place-keeping us safe from outside threats, dealing with our allies, enemies and enforcing our constitution. This redefines politicians as people who work for us, which is how it should be.

Money is the insidious bribe offered, the justification being "the government belongs to us, we deserve to get that money instead of it going to wasteful spending". Easy to swallow, tastes great going down and by the time the fan gets hit, it's too late. The only thing we remember is how good it tastes to swallow.

The only part of it that qualifies as "welfare" is the Medicaid expansion, which was purposely badly designed and a program that is hated by Barack Obama as much as it is by Paul Ryan. Obama, in fact, has been trying to gut "entitlements" since the day he got in office--the breakfast he opted to attend during the 2009 inaugural was hosted by Pete Petersen, who is also the mentor/benefactor of Paul Ryan and Simpson and Bowles of the "Catfood Commission."

If you want to blame people for the survival of these programs, blame the Tea Party. Obama has been trying to give the Republicans exactly what they want for five years but couldn't because most of the caucus turned out to be spiteful morons who couldn't see the long con Obama and Boehner were playing with the electorate. In this way, I sort of see the Tea Party as a weird force that often does the right things for horribly misguided and shitty reasons.

Medicare is not free. I paid into Medicare most of my working life and continue to pay for it now. Every month the Medicare premiums are held out of my Social Security payment. Additionally, there is a substantial deductible which must be met every year before I can start receiving benefits and Medicare only pays 80% of what they consider to be fair compensation for providers. Both the deductible and the balance is covered by the supplemental health insurance I pay for myself.

This is not a complaint; I am just correcting your misstatement.
