And yet.... Parisians duck and run when a car backfires, and public gatherings are being discouraged.... Belgium has essentially been shut down for 3 days now.... Russia and France are both using the word 'war'....
I'd say the terrorists have achieved a great deal, wouldn't you?

Of course, it's natural to be frightened so soon after a terrorist attack.

The important thing is to not collectively piss yourself out of fear, institute every fascist whackadoodle policy that's been sitting on the shelf, and start bombing innocent people just to maintain your national hard-on.

Check back in 3 months... 6 months... a year.

Not all of Belgium, only Brussels.

Yes, they have. They've given the racists a convenient justification for their racism.

Think larger and longer term. It is meant that we should not allow our liberal democracies to evolve into fascist states by heavy handed responses, curtailing of freedoms or blaming scapegoats. Even with popular support of a recently frightened and agitated mob.

And now Turkey has shot down a Russian fighter plane.
This entire thing is going to get out of control very quickly.

What's going to be the reaction when there's another terrorist attack - perhaps in Germany, or even Russia?

Russia already get terrorist style attacks. Chechen fighters striving for independence have used suicide bombers and hostage taking. Moscow theatre and Beslan School massacre. They are Muslim fighters.

I hesitate to call them terrorists as fighting for independence, that the old Soviet/Tsarist systems took from them and new corrupt federal system would not give back, makes them more mujahidin then terrorists. There tactics are terrorist. But they fight an asymmetric war against a world superpower. Were the IRA terrorists?

Russia has fought the Afghans. They know defeat at hands of popular resistance fighters. The Russians created Al-Qaeda and created power vacuum for Taliban to step in by invading Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda was a database of support and logistics to help Afghan resistance fighters. Who were the good guys back then. We boycotted Olympics in support of Afghanistan and it's resistance to the USSR. With ex-KGB like Putin in power I say Ivan gets what he deserves. With all due regard for loss of innocent civilians lives. Speaking government here not people.

To defeat Saddam the first time meant US infidel troops in Saudi Arabian holy land or face forcing an amphibious landing on Kuwaiti beaches. Saudis failed to reel in radical Wahhabis who ran Al-Qaeda who objected to infidels on home soil. Turns out in the long run. Probably less casualties if they had stormed the beaches and avoided Saudi soil.

You can see the effects of living under any totalitarian system theocratic, autocratic, communist or fascist in Eastern Europe ideals. A couple of generations of isolated Soviet rule stymied the liberal development of Eastern Europe. In many ways on things as race and sexual preference, they're two generations behind us. You don't want to be a gypsy in East Europe or gay in Russia.

Much of the Muslim world has been under colonial or totalitarian rule of some sort since the early 1800s. Usually creates an environment that is hard enough to survive let alone develop progressive liberal ideals.

The terrorists or the scaremongering state?

Being born a Yorkshireman, I agree with you.

But there are many Americans IMO who would not consider the IRA a terrorist organization. Not very nice blokes but not terrorist.

An English source will almost always call them terrorists. Point of view and perspective.

I did say I agreed they are terrorists. There was for last 100 years a chance to talk things out. You fight if there is NO chance of talking it out. Plus soft targets not likable. Stick to army, police, infrastructure and government buildings as legit targets. Not pubs or shops.

Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.

True.

On the bright side the greatest number of people killed by terrorist groups tend to be their own.

That may be deciding factor in terrorist or resistance fighter. A resistance fighter has such popular support it would be silly to inflict deaths on your supporters. And if you do. You show up with cash and support in hand begging forgiveness.

Nazis called Free French and Allied commandos terrorists.

Not so sure it's a brightside. If being killed by terrorist doubtful you are really of their own. Even if the terrorists look, speak and have similar upbringing as you.
