Love is just a lie

"Love is a lie."
"Two people can never really understand each other."
"Nothing in this world is free."
"People are just animals following their drives."
"Nothing's dumber than trusting someone else."

I'm trying to write a jaded character, one who's had enough bitter experiences to become cynical on a whole lot of levels, and I can get the sort of attitude and feel of the character alright, but catchy phrases for them to think in I'm falling short on. Can anyone offer any? Mine are falling super flat at this time in the morning, probably because I've had a minor breakthrough in my writing and so I'm super excited/enthusiastic and falling out of that character's mindset.

If you're passing by this thread, give me any of your cynical outlooks, please! I don't care if they're trite bumper-sticker or T-shirt text nonsense, any of it will help me out with the feel of this character right now.

Selfish. Lying. Deceitful. Betrayed. Bastard.

You think he loves you but he doesn't. If he loved you, why would he have sex with your mother? That happened to me with my ex. He had sex with my incestuous, whore of a mother. She worked as a stripper but told everyone she was a model because she was 5'10" back in the 60's and 70's.

If he loved you, why is he never home? He'd rather spend his free time at a cop bar in Boston than with me and I was never invited.

He had a separate, secret bank account. With him working undercover, he had a separate, secret life with people I never met. People in love don't have separate, secret lives. Lovers talk about what they do when not together. He never talked. He had too many secrets. Secrets and lies best described my ex-husband.

Jaded? You bet I am. I'm beyond jaded. I'm an angry bitch.

He had women on the side, a lot of women, some not as pretty and shapely as me but others were built like a high end, celebrity stripper with the face of a model.

I always wanted to have a baby. He fucked me morning, noon, and night on the pretense of getting me pregnant. Then, at the divorce proceedings, when the lawyers left the room, he said with a smug laugh, "I never wanted kids. I had a vasectomy just before we married."

I couldn't believe it. I was such a fool. Glad that it was over, our marriage lasted three, long suffering years. If I had a gun, I would have shot him dead.

Yet, I don't believe love is a lie. I still believe in love, I do. I just haven't found the right man.

Love is a work in process. I'm not a romanticist or a believer in love at first sight, it takes a lifetime of living together before real love is found. One day, I'll find someone who loves me as much as I love him.

Um, my mind is blank atm because I haven't wrote that kind of character yet, but have you considered listening to music too? I find that helps.

Ask JBJ / Noirtrash for advice. He's just overflowing with cynical crap about users, luzers, abusers, and generally jaded jerks.

If you don't want to go that far you could have your player say, "Fuck it, I'm done with the dating scene," something like that. Maybe throw in their backstory of disillusionment and dejection. "I deserved the first divorce. Three divorces were two too many. I won't get fooled again." But mere catchy phrases of cynicism will float away like farts IMHO.

I'd kill myself to end the suffering, but my family says that I can't because they'd be sad.

It doesn't seem fair to me; I have to suffer so they can be happy in my misery.

My advice? Go to an American political forum. It doesn't matter if it is a liberal forum or a conservative forum. They are both full of jaded hate filled people who have lost all sense of perspective and any modicum of decency. You should find LOTS of material for any jaded cynical character there.

That was my first thought, too. People don't talk or think in catch phrases normally. Better to find some way to show the character doing some things that are jaded, cynical, dickish, whatever.

Unless youre Charlie Sheen hookers are far better than girlfriends, I mean, you don't gotta feed em, and you don't gotta wonder if theyre fuckin all your friends or gonna try and steal your wallet. A hooker is real peace o mind. If she gets knocked up you jes naturally hope it aint yours.

I said, "People don't talk or think in catch phrases normally."

I believe that disqualifies any character you would want to write.

It usta be common in America

Aphorisms from the Quarters.

LIGHT cotton-bale mighty often take mo baggin dan de heavy one.

LONG har dont hide de brand on de horse.

NEW-GROUNDS take de toughness out de beefsteak.

ITS wasin time to cook de batter-cake on bofe sides.

MUDDY road calls de mile-pos a liar.

Tis hard to make cloes fit a miserbul man.

CoAxIN some folks is like coolin quicklime wid a cup o water.

DE stopper gits de longes res in de empty jug.

HORSESHOE ober de do dont dribe orf de tax col- lector.

DE church-bells sometimes do better wuk dan de sermon.

SOME o de wus lookin animals at de county far got to pay to git in.

DE cleanes paf is de wus one to lay down in.

DE wus skeered man is ap to miss de safes place.

TALKIN to some folks is same as warmin your fingers by a piece o fox-fire.

Uncle Remus for the unfamiliar

Note: One of the huge problems antebellum blacks had was their local dialects. A black from Atlanta couldn't make sense of what a Savannah black said. In some of the stories Uncle Remus is totally bewildered by what visiting blacks say. This was common across the South.

I might be off base but I suspect that if you nail down the character the words will come.

I'm sure everyone in a group like this knows what aphorisms are, JB. Despite how ubiquitous they may be in Uncle Remus, few are writing Uncle Remus tales these days.

Wonder if anyone ever adapted Uncle Remus to noir...

It can be done.

My new character invented laconic. When a woman demands to know his feelings for her he puts her hand on his package.
