WTF is happening in Paris?

See I think it's totally location dependent. I don't think the nature of killings in a shit hole are any less brutal or fucked up.

The media is all over Paris....got reporters sitting around bored and shit.

Nobody cares about the back water jungle tribes of the Congo or Burma or street urchins in Mexico. So they get blips on CNN's ticker or a 5 second clip at best because no coverage, no hype, no story.

Everybody knows the answer, but it's not PC to say it. #Parisianlivesmattermore because of ratings.

Most people are completely unaware that deplorable and atrocious acts are happening on the daily. They are blissfully ignorant of the horrors faced by so many people, and only know what the mass media puts in front of them. Perhaps even worse, you're right that many do not give one fuck.

This does not make the attacks in France today unworthy of media attention and mass concern and outrage.

It's crass to bring it up in this situation but it's all about perspective. It's not in the interests of the people financing the news organizations of the world--i.e. multinational corporate conglomerates--to have a "frenzy" over the killings that are done to fatten the bottom lines of their benefactors, e.g. killing labor organizers where we grow bananas, indiscriminately killing civilians where we procure our oil, turning a blind eye to slavery where we get our precious gems, etc.

The old 'look for he who benefits' thing.

Sounds about right.

Maybe crass to some but I doubt all the other dead folks would agree.

I wonder if it's really the media/money or actually a human phenomena to be selective about where/how we spend our emotional capital.

It's partly location dependant of course. But more importantly relational proximity. Even in this thread there are people who were worried for friends directly affected. Had this been in, I dunno... Luanda, that would be much less likely.

Or about the countless people who die of AIDS or malnutrition in 3rd world countries, on a daily basis. Or the civilians killed in the Middle East by all the Western meddling. Or about those who die at an early age after working in coal mines.
And so on.

Shit like that happens everyday, but only today, some assholes need to show their lack of empathy?

Yeah, if this would happen in Luanda, maybe nobody would care, but nobody would say "why do YOU care?"

Don't generalize. You and Des had good reasons to be affected; you have friends or relatives over yhere. And others, perhaps.
But Sean and a couple of others: they were milking it for the adrenalin rush.

Oh I totally agree....on all points.

Again, thanks for being a heartless bitch, except to Smoovieasshole.

We'd put that on TV too, but it might interfere with Smooth's Real Housewives marathon.

Paris is one of the media capitals of the world. Any news organization that purports to be taken seriously has a presence there. It's relatively easy to cover, and that's why it's being covered. That doesn't make this day any less of a tragedy.

Ahh ok that makes much more sense.

Right on....

Historically? Mostly whatever field of fire I assigned myself.

:D

No, it's a matter of character, personality.

Yes, there were a lot of people in the world never cared about what happened on 9/11, but quite a lot did and showed empathy. Same happened tonight.

You decided to be shitty. It's OK.

I don't watch reality shows.

I agree with that. It Is a tragedy, and on a cerebral level, we all get that.
But on an emotional level: some of us also have the right to be honest about how we feel, without having the PC crap shoved in our face. I just don't want to pretend that I'm heartbroken, when I'm not.

I personally am much less affected by the fact that 20 people lost their lives (countless people die every day, and I don't give a shit about them either), as I am by the fact that this is a historical event with disastruous consequences.

I don't want to pretend I think of your behavior any different than being shitty heartless.

I personally am much less affected by the fact that 20 people lost their lives ..

I get it.

Let's all say: I don't give a fuck about you, whether you or a relative of you is dead or alive or kick the bucket in front of your eyes.

This definitely will make the world a better place.

Oh, I forgot. That's too liberal.

(Btw: about 140 died this night.....)

No, it's a matter of character, personality.

I don't think it is....I think you're underestimating the influence the media and their monetary interest have over your perception of the world.

Yes, there were a lot of people in the world never cared about what happened on 9/11, but quite a lot did and showed empathy. Same happened tonight.

That has nothing to do with what I'm talking about.

If you would tone down your emotional hysteria and read you might understand that....but I'm not holding my breath.

You decided to be shitty. It's OK.

What exactly was shitty?

No, what I was trying to imply, in a polite way, was that I'm no drama queen. I don't like to bat my eyelashes and pull my hair in public out of compassion for mankind. I like to keep it to myself.

That has nothing to do with what I'm talking about.

Then you don't know what you're talking about. Because that's what it's all about.

If you would tone down your emotional hysteria....

What exactly was shitty?

You decided to say what you think.

Now, take responsibility, live with the consequences.

I already told what was shitty, but you won't get it in years, I think.

Actually, you decided not to keep it to yourself.

You'd still have my liking if you did.

Then you don't know what you're talking about. Because that's what it's all about.

I'm sorry it's just not because PoopingTom Sayz so....that's not how the real world works.

You decided to say what you think.

I take responsibility.......you didn't say what was shitty you just said it was.

Now tell me why the French are more important than all the other people brutally murdered in shit holes around the world. I think it's because you care more about white folks.
