make me cringe and/or want to throw a heavy object at the radio/tv. This is non-partisan, politicians of every strip and persuasion are guilty of these utterances, one party may use one more than the other, but the other has their own pet buzz words/phrases as well so it all evens out in the end.
"Invest" - Invariably used to convince the voter to vote for higher taxes. Monies that are, for the most part, pissed away on some pet project/initiative of the politician. And as often as not the term is used improperly. One example I heard recently was some member of the House of Representatives, his party is of no matter here, harping about increasing taxes so as to "invest" in the crumbling infrastructure. While I do agree that the infrastructure is in need of repair, repair is NOT an investment. It's merely periodic maintenance. Further to "invest" implies that the investor should reasonably expect a return on their investment. All too often these "investments" become permanent Albatross's around the taxpayers neck. Any politician that uses the term should make your red flags waving.
"It's for the children" - Merely an over-used code phrase for "It's for my constituent business donors." I can't begin to conceive of how much of the national debt can be attributed to the voter buying into the notion behind that phrase. Education is a prime example of how much has been pissed away. Just look at the most recent national "report card."
"It's the 'right' thing to do" - One of the most loaded and arrogant phrase a politician can utter. Designed for the primary purpose of putting anyone that disagrees with the speaker on a guilt trip. The phrase carries with it the implicit notion that anyone that disagrees with the speaker to be evil, selfish, stupid, unethical, racist, homophobic, misogynist, or fill in the blank with any one of a whole host of negative descriptive adjectives.
Feel free to add your own pet peeve words/phrases.
