Voting Question

First, apologies if there are a million other threads on this topic. I'm not an active forum visitor and my search for "voting" didn't lead me to any threads.
So here is my question.
We all know the ratio of hits to votes is dismal-well, at least for most of us- but here's a new one for me. I have a new story that was running at a steady 4.0 with 6 votes in 4000+ hits. Haha see what I mean. I just checked it and the votes went down to 5 and the score went up to 4.40. I'm confused. First I didn't know a vote could be retracted and second, without going into calc how could the score change so drastically? Appreciate any insight you might have. Otherwise, keep up the good work writing great stories. I enjoy reading them even more than writing.

The site periodically "sweeps" suspicious votes. It could be that you had 4s and 5s, and then a 1, which brings things down sharply. If the 1 was deleted as a result of the sweeps, that could result in an improved score.

Other users know more about this than I do, but I think I got the gist of it.

Thanks. I didn't know they did those sweeps. And I guess I could see how one bad vote out of my six might seem suspicious. Lol. Now if they could just figure a way to encourage voting.

I put you and PILOT in a Vietnam war story, set in the towns of Phat Twaht and Phuc mi Dong.

They actually swept a 2 vote. When you had 6 votes you had 24 total points from those votes. Subtract one vote and two points you have 5 votes and 22 points. The average score then is 22/5 or 4.4

Forget votes. Some people will love everything you write. Some will hate everything. Watching votes will only drive you nutz. Posting stories in some categories will get you a few nice votes but not many views. Other categories will grab MANY eyeballs but result in many indifferent votes.

Forget votes. Watch the views, comments, and favorites. The comments and favorites numbers show that you have affected readers. That's my goal: impinging on people's brainwaves. If I tweaked them enough to make them respond, I've done my job.

Favoriting vs. 5-Starring

I was getting 1-bombed in my only LW post, so in the comments I posted:

When the cuckold-phobic annonies get finished "1-blasting" a story, it can take many months for a more-realistic average score to develop. But there is nothing they can do to undo a reader "favoriting" the story. I appreciate it!<<

I immediately go 8 or 10 more Faves.

As I understand, others may know better, entries in the themed contests get votes of 3 or less swept quickly.

You might consider posting in a contest to get a more accurate judgement of your story.

Nope, contests sweeps are more or less the same as any other sweep only a little deeper.

And the sweeping for contests seems now mostly done at the end of the contest. You have to actually be submitting stories to have an idea how the sweeping works.
