Hurricane Patricia

huge. thank goodness for plenty of warning so tens of thousands can be evacuated. scary, life-changing event.

The weather/climate people are predicting a more-than-average cyclone season for Oz this summer.
Hopefully that will also mean the drought-stricken northern inland regions get some much needed rain....

Just WOW! CNN reported that they were a bit delayed in evacuation? I hope people remain safe but it does not look good.

I just hope everyone in its path makes it to safety. We'll probably get some rain and flooding from it this weekend. We're fortunate to be on high ground.

I find it interesting that you aren't aware that data on cyclones and hurricanes has been collected since 1850-ish.

But no where near as accurately as today.

The data is better now. The storms are not necessarily stronger. It's just as possible that storms then were as strong, but not accurately measured.

Patricia is apparently the stongest Pacific Coast Hurricane. How that compares with Caribbean/Atlantic strengths? I don't know, but Patricia is a beast by any measurement.

Barometric pressure has been accurately measured for a very long time.

Bullshit.

They are NOT getting stronger. They ARE being located and measured for the first time.

You've been fooled by propagandists and randomness.

Why Hurricane Patricia Can't Be Blamed On Climate Change

From the link you provided:

Willoughby and Kirtman agree. Even if climate change is playing some unknown role, it would be adding only a small percentage to the chances of a storm like Patricia forming. A single record-breaking event, even within in a record El Niño year, cannot be linked to climate change.

"Maybe we'll look back in a hundred years and say, 'this is where it all began,'" says Willoughby. But even if that doesn't happen, he predicts global warming will eventually heat the oceans to the point that this kind of rapidly intensified hurricane becomes more frequent.

So this one likely isn't due to global warming. It would be impossible to prove anyway (and since nobody in this thread made that claim, you're jousting at windmills again) but the experts - that YOU quoted - are still saying what you refuse to hear.

Winds were measured by NHC/USAF aircraft at 200MPH; strongest ever recorded in any ocean.

Possibly also recorded record low pressure, but unconfirmed so far.

The Weather Channel and Weather.com are explicitly comparing Patricia to Camille and other record breaking Atlantic storms.

PS: Apparently there have been some "Typhoons" in the Western Pacific that have been stronger, but this is "the strongest anywhere storms are called Hurricanes."

the weather channel can kiss my ass.

with all the technology available to them, their coverage of mexico at this point in time is shit. another east coast asshole trying to tell the world something of substance about a place other than new england. the BBC has better coverage of this event, and they're across the atlantic.

sorry new englanders.

that was uncalled for.

i just got pissy this afternoon when i went to check on some locations and the data was shit on weather. com. there was an ensuing conversation with someone about better weather services for non east coast people. my people are safe. i know others who are not so fortunate. morning will tell.

weather.com is always spotty. it's really only good for figuring out what the next few hours might be like and nothing more.

and you should always check the map because they are terrible at updating their information. i don't know how many times that site has said it wasn't raining with clear skies here for hours when it had been cloudy and raining the whole damned time.

Every cloud has a silver lining! We even hear about Oz droughts way up here in the Great White North. Our fire seasons are reversed. I believe we exchange forest fire fighters. Oz crews have been in BC.

As for global warming. Entirely possible. Entirely possible it is caused by humans too.

We live in a time of low sea levels. At one time the arctic ocean was 70' and had crocodiles.

30' rise in sea level and 4 degree rise in temp is a tiny tiny blib on the world's sea levels and planet average temps. Caused by us this time, probably. Five years of record volcanic activity of just the right (wrong) type could cause about same result.

Disastrous for human beings and their civilization? Maybe! Very inconvenient to say the least.

At one time, world human population was 32,000. A stretch of global warming saved the race from extinction. Created a genetic bottle neck too. Explains lack of genetic variety in humans.

You're thinking of Noah's Ark.

Who cares? Everyone always acts like this whole planet isn't trying to kill everyone all the time whenever there's a 'disaster' or a house fire....

You're thinking of Noah's Ark.

The story of Noah would never have floated in Scotland.

God

I will make it rain for 40 days and 40 nights.

Noah (in Scots accent)

Is that a' ye hae. Local record 'ere is 53 days.
