Beginning of rant!

I'm sick of seeing mass shootings on tv!
I'm further sick of the " give people more guns so less people die" argument! ARE YOU FUCKING 5? That's no fucking agument!
I also get told " oh they over report the shootings" ?!? Ummm I'm Australian and I hear about shootings ALMOST EVERY DAY IN THE US!

THATS NOT OVER REPORTING THATS A NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT!

Stop being so scared of our gun laws. It's not hard to get a gun in Aus. My housemate owns a rifle! He got his permit with not much hassle. He apparently had a prior on his record so he had to go to court to get his permit. But he still got his gun. It's not fucking rocket science!

Stop using the second amendment as an excuse to keep guns.
You've made amendments to first, to allow your government to take all your privacy laws away. Which was why the second was written, TO STOP THE GOV FROM DOING THAT. You missed the boat guys. Put down your guns and get a new hobby.

End of rant!

Then stay the fuck in Australia and stop watching US news....problem solved guy!!

I plan on it! The idea of going to the US of A scares me.
You give pink guns to little girls there! How did that marketing meeting go?
"ummm we're not selling enough Guns"
"Oh, I know. Let's market to kids!"
Wtf?
Something like 45 School shootings so far this year!
Again I call National Embarrassment on that. Yet you all shout "More Guns!"
Unfortunately tales of mass shooting is fucking EVERYWHERE! Not just US news. Unless you didn't catch that last remark, I think your news is a bit of a joke too.

Don't let this post confuse you. I'm not anti-American or anything. I just don't know how you can't make your government DO anything about it.

Don't like it?... Don't watch it...

Too scared to come here?..... Fuck it, we don't need your business either. Stay in Australia.

As far as anything else?.. Who cares what you think...

So I'm clearly not getting intelligent conversation on this topic.

Who would of thought I'd get the
*beats fists to chest*
"Don't come here then" comments? (oh wait! I knew they where coming those kinds of comments are standard)

Umm again, not planning on a visit.
Who cares? Well you felt the need to leave a nasty comment. So umm, you?

I had the rant because I'm sick to death of hearing about them. I got it out. I thought that maybe some people might enjoy an intelligent back and forth on this topic. It's sorely needed.

They market disease causing foods to kids all the time killing FAR more people than any mass shooting.

National embarrassment? To who?

If it's not live video of the event in question everyone's news is a joke and spun to whatever narrative the owners/managers of the news want. It's all become commercialized and politicized.

Could have fooled me.

We can make our government do something about it, we choose not to because they have fucked it up one too many times so we just accept the fact that gun violence is on a decline and keep going.

I had the rant because I'm sick to death of hearing about them. I got it out. I thought that maybe some people might enjoy an intelligent back and forth on this topic. It's sorely needed

It's not needed at all....M'uricuh loves guns more than the rather tiny fraction of a % of victims they claim in the hands of nutters.

America is the same as it ever was except for the insane policy for gun free zones. A gun free zone is a shooting gallery.

You can't buy real guns in Russia easily. The most you can buy is traumatic guns, and you'll have to gather all sorts of paperwork, medical blanks and whatnot to proove you are trustworthy, you will be checked by police too.

What's the result? If I hear that someone is shot once in a few months - that would be "Really Often". Generally, there's no shooting involved at all. We still do have homicidal crime occasionally, but generally it's about knives or fists. Shooting? Once every few months at best.

I hear about american shootings almost every day. Shooting in schools, supermarkets, on the streets. At least every month there's an incident where dozens of people are dead or hurt, involving a gun in the hands of some psychically unstable person.

That's just scary. If you ask me, better off without guns.

I heard statistics that said that in US there are 88 guns per each 100 of civilian citizens. That's scary. Because that means that a lot of those guns are held by someone with mental problems, depression, or just simply stupid or mean person in general.

Hint: do not expect intelligent discussion on changes to gun laws in US.
Americans - especially gun supporters - do not appreciate people from other countries - trying to tell them what to do or think, even when it's patently obvious SOMETHING has to be done.

End of rant!

It's unfortunate that TV's in Oz don't have on/off or change channel controls.

It is a very emotional subject and difficult to have a rational or rant-free discussion about it. As an American citizen, I appreciate the OP views and comments and welcome your weighing in on it. Australia has had their struggles with this issue and has tried to deal with it. We might learn something from the experience of others sometimes. Or at least keep an open mind.

Having said that, this website is very alarming with information tracking on U.S. shootings:

http://shootingtracker.com

I am always for discussions, so please don't bite my head off here. Note who just won the Nobel Peace Prize: The Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet. Heavy dialogue.

I think I see the problem
In America, Horton heard a who.
Apparently in Aus, Horton was offered a who.
Simple

Handguns, Rifles, Shotguns, BB Guns, Pellet Guns, Sling Shot, Bow and Arrow, Knife....all of these could be considered "Assault Weapons".....

Maybe we should ban silverware, spoons, shivs, shanks, and harsh language.

And once the entire world is weapon-free and full of only good intentions...I'm sure we'll live forever.

In the meantime however, I'll deal with the real world...a place where details matter, and we don't 'redefine' every issue to fit our own preconceived notions.

Wikipedia? Really?
You posted info sourced from the FBI, which some goon at National Review looked at and said, "Aha! Nothing about assault weapons on it. I have an idea for a headline that will get lots of hits."

Please excuse me for highlighting the dumbfuckery. I linked to Wikipedia to back up what should be obvious to everyone else.

As far as a "rational, intelligent conversation" goes, you gave it a pretty poor start.

The truly stunning thing about the vast majority of the response to mass shootings in the United States is the crazily distinct priorities of those on either side of the issue. On one side, the starting place for discussion is concern for people's weaponry (often covered in the Cheez-Whiz of concern for constitutional rights) while the other side starts from a concern for people's lives.

There's something wrong with this picture, and it's not going to change soon. One of the uglier truths is that even if the NRA went out of business tomorrow, the latent hostility toward regulation of firearm ownership they created over the last few decades will persist for decades more.

Firearms make so many acts of anger so much worse than they would be otherwise, and make some possible that would never, ever, be conceivable without them. Talk all you want about how cars and baseball bats and knives can and are used to kill others, but you can't pull off a Sandy Hook, Aurora movie theater, or Umpquaa style attack with a car or a baseball bat or a knife.

I get sick at heart every time I read about another mass shooting, largely because I also know that mass shootings are the exception rather than the rule in American gun deaths. They just get the headlines. The other 29,999 people who die every year from firearm use go unnoticed. American guns have killed something like 150,000 people since September 11, 2001, yet we are vastly more alarmed about the threat of terrorism (Oh, look! A socially acceptable way to be racist again. Woo hoo!) than we are about our own guns.

Something is terribly wrong with this picture.

Wikipedia or the FBI -

I tend to trust the FBI regarding firearms more than I trust a site than can be revised at any time. Writing an article about the how complex even defining different weapons is an important step to understanding the issue. You distilled all of that effort and called the guy a 'goon'.......

Your response is to find the broadest definition of assault weapons (which included shoulder fired grenade launchers) and use that to try and discredit the nations foremost law enforcement agency, or at a minimum, the data they produce. Why?

Even if you spent the time to review the article on Wikipedia, it actually supports the FBI information. Details matter. Defining weapons is important if you want legislation that will actually address the issue.

Now..that's a rational response. Doesn't include wikipedia. Let's hear more ad hominen.
Supports the FBI's information? When it says assault weapons aren't tracked by the FBI when they certainly are? That doesn't seem to be misleading, disingenuous or just plain false to you?

Oh god you with your assault waepons boner....

The FBI quit bothering tracking them back in the 90's because while they did they found the amount of people using expensive high end weaponry in crimes vs. cheap street pistols was practically non existent. People just don't go buy 800-3000 dollar rifle to rob the am/pm....

The overwhelming majority of the time they go get a 100 dollar pistol from the thug down the street. Even the mass shootings where people are trying to make a point what...like 1% of them have been done with an 'assault' rifle? Almost all of them are done with 9mm/40cal hand guns.

Get a clue you fucking putz....pistols are the issue, not AR-15's or AK's .....no matter how scary you think they look.

Congrats, you were the first to come back with an intelligent reply!

I don't think there is a hope in hell they'll EVER ban guns in the USA but I sorely hope they close the gap for buying guns without police checks.
What the Gun Nuts don't realise is that no one is saying "take all the guns!" They're saying "why don't we just make sure we only give guns to people who have had the correct checks?"
The difference it would make would suprise you to no end.

We already go through a variety of checks, which one do you think will stop mass shootings?

Write out the law you think will stop mass shootings in the US, we would all like to know.

Here's one : STOP GIVING GUNS TO CRAZY PEOPLE!
How do you do that? FUCKING STRONGER CHECKS!
It's not rocket science dude.
Our last mass shooting was Port Arthur.. We tightened gun laws (I know everyone says we banned guns but that's not true we still have them, but only responsible people get them)
When was our last mass shooting? Hmmmm let me think.
Oh right, WE HAVENT HAD A MASS SHOOTING SINCE!

Well let's start with stopping people buying guns at gunshows without a check. It's doable, we have similar things here. How about preventing mail order guns (also without checks)? No private gun sales without checks? These are just 3 gaps you could close.

Again I'm not saying ban all guns. But you could certainly do with baning some types.
If your a responsible gun owner sure go for your life. My point is that you guys are handing out guns to crazy people with out checking!
You don't do that with Cars, you need a licence for that.

Does no one find it incredible that you need a licence for a car, but not a gun?

I agree we could ban lots of guns and only let 200 folks have old school rifles but that kinda shit just won't fly here. For all intents and purposes it's a ban.

Well let's start with stopping people buying guns at gunshows without a check. It's doable, we have similar things here. How about preventing mail order guns (also without checks)? No private gun sales without checks? These are just 3 gaps you could close.

The only sales here that happen without a check are private sales.....which if they are checked are no longer private. All that would require is a ban of private gun sales.

How do you suppose that will stop a) private gun sales or b) violent gun crimes???

The majority of gun crimes are done with guns already obtained illegally....lol

Again I'm not saying ban all guns. But you could certainly do with baning some types.

Which ones? Which type of gun would you ban that you think would stop gun violence in America?

If your a responsible gun owner sure go for your life. My point is that you guys are handing out guns to crazy people with out checking!

No we are not, that's just buushit....you might argue we should have more comprehensive checks but unless you do a private sale you're getting your paperwork run.

You don't do that with Cars, you need a licence for that.

Does no one find it incredible that you need a licence for a car, but not a gun?

You don't need a licence to buy a car. I can buy a car online with a wire transfer and have it delivered 0 checks/licencing.

I need a licence/registration to operate it on a public road, not to buy/own.

Please just shut up , no one is giving guns to crazy people in America.
We unlike the rest of the world have protected birthrights and one of them is to be able to own firearms ,free speech and not be the subject to the crown but a free citizen in our homeland.

If your not one of us then please keep your views to yourself, but someone is sure giving guns to Muslims to walk around Oz and kill non Muslims with, why don't you sort that issue out.

No really our land our laws now bugger off!
