I really have no strong opinions about Renoir. If they want to campaign to have certain artists removed from fine art galleries, however, I can think of far more deserving recipients of their ire.
The signs made me laugh.

renoir_sucks_at_paintingLeaving the #sharpie eyes and #rosacea aside, and ignoring, for the time being, the ridiculously #blotchy #rottingvegetation backgrpund, I want to be clear that no humanoid female has a ham/ upper thigh that's 5 times thicker than her torso. If we can just admit #Renoir's #shortcomings we can begin to address the negative effects the veneration of his work has had on our culture. #dalechihuly #RenoirSucksAtPainting

How the fuck is someone supposed to read this crap. Seriously.

I like Chihuly's work

The MFA has room enough for almost anything.
And they are always adding more room, for more.

Bal à Bougival, for me, please.

artists go in and out of style. renoir holds historical significance as one of the first impressionists and as such, i think it's important to study and show his work. personally, i prefer degas, and in person, monet simply took my breath away. i believe max geller is a professional shit stirrer, and while he has points to make about the lack of modern art shown in museums and the technical quality of renoir's work, the signs and protests are just fanciful silliness.

meanwhile pollock's art is falling apart due to lack of technical integrity. i'd protest him before renoir.

I was thinking of mentioning him, but I didn't want to get in a modern vs old debate.

i believe he falls into the shitty art debate. :D seriously. popping pollocks. he was a narcissistic male, which most of them were who have work in museums or make any headway in the art world.

Pollock sucks monkey bollocks. So does Warhol. In fact, just about everything since Turner.

i believe there is a lack of old school technical training among many of today's art schools. yes, go out and find your own way, but first, master the basics. dali was born after turner died, and i love his work.

And why was Picasso so revered? I would much rather look at Renoir any day.

I was at in a exhibit in Pittsburgh that had three water lilies displayed in one room on at least two walls, a corner. It was mind blowing, I became a Monet fan that day. This was long before liking impressionism was a thing.

I just bought 3 Monet wooden framed prints at a garage sale a for days ago, in great condition for a total of $5. One of them I had not seen before, it's a print from the Hermitage.

I might put them up in the living room, Lourve style. There are a lot of small rooms and walls here. Real art will be in private spaces. :)

Some day Neci, we need to talk about art. Maybe even a museum tour!

Actually, Dali is one of the few modern artists I can live with. Matisse, too.

picasso was the creator of cubism and deeply enmeshed in politics. he deconstructed painting in a way never before seen. just because you don't appreciate him, doesn't mean he doesn't hold historical significance or his paintings beauty. it simply means you have little taste.

The same with textile arts and clothing design. It's all very well to be a deconstructionalist but you should know what you are deconstructing.

By the way, my first flaming on Lit was over art, the painting in my AV actually.
A woman who taught art history or something who knew a lot, but I know a lot about this particular painting and I strongly disagreed with her.
The only person who can tell me what the artist meant to say is the artist themselves, anything else is merely conjecture.

Did you know Henry James wrote something like 14 different interpretations of The Turn of the Screw?

or education. Not everyone gets to study and see art growing up. Not all children hang out in museums and libraries like I did/do.

The best way to look at Picasso is to look at Guenrica as it was displayed in a small room by itself with the sounds of bombs in the background.
This 3D video might help.

Oh I have taste, maybe not as refined as yours but it is certainly valid. He was a master at self promotion and many people are simply afraid to point out that he was something of a fraud.
