Natural Disaster evacuation: what do you take with you?

The Clash, London Calling, on vinyl.

Post apocalypse there should be lots of turntables out there.

I do not think I have to worry about that.

I live high on a hill and the forest is too damp to burn. If the New Madrid faults again, then I'll be busy digging out...

I actually went through something similar, once.
My dogs.

When I fled Hurricane Katrina I barely took anything. I took enough clothes for the next 2-3 days, some sandals, grabbed the PC (this accounts for quite a lot actually....pictures, music...) and that was about it. In hindsight I wished I'd taken the meat out of my freezer and thrown it in the dumpster. When I saw on TV that my stuff was likely destroyed I didn't feel bad at all. It was freeing, I no longer felt tied down and that for the first time in a bit I had an unencumbered horizon and many new and exciting choices.

My Dad specifically built his retirement home just out of tsunami range. He used more concrete in the place then the Guns of Navarone. He had amply water, fuel and food supplies to hunker down forever. He had a shortwive set and a generator big enough that when needed he powered his home as well as the neighbors.

He still had a grab and go bag by the door with water purification supplies, dehydrated food, lighter, light batteries, first aid, space blanket, etc etc. He didn't have any firearms though. Sort of would suck to have it all taken by a marauding band of zombies.

You mean when New Madrid goes again, if you are still alive...

;) ;)

I'm grabbing the AK...

I had a great (and informative) thread about surviving the coming doomsday. Over the years I've decided to stop prepping and just plan on taking someone else's stuff.

Ahhh got to do this a few weeks ago because fire, living things aside....the hard drive/laptop....that file crate filled with all that super important bitch to replace type shit like birth certs and shot records along with the go bag were in the car in about 90 seconds.

From the time Deputy friendly showed up to say mandatory GTFO to the time I was pulling out was about 3 min.

Granted I got lucky with the cat being super cooperative but even then, I think the hours of getting her unafraid of that cage may have played a part in that, because she loaded right up without any shit.

So I was still rather pleased with my response under no bull shit mandatory evacuation conditions.

On a side note the fires this season were like, seriously, totally, bro dude over the fucking top crazyville... What am I saying there's still like a bazzillion acres still burning....

Waiting for rain....any day now el nino....:(

PS I've since updated my GTFO gear with a sampler of my seed collection, just the irreplaceable stuff. I thought about it on my way out and was butt hurt, they don't take up a whole lot of space or weight much but most of them represent quite a bit of work and/or money. So...what's important to you?

I wouldn't have trouble loading the cats up...if I could find them. They could be anywhere at any given time.

I had a fire threat about 18 yrs ago but everything I owned could fit in a car, so grabbing my go to stuff was easy. Now, not so much.

Stuff. What's the important stuff?

You must eat a lot of fries.

i grabbed two sleeping bags, my phone, purse (car keys) and kids.

Twice in my life I have had to grab and run.
The first time I had no time to take anything... just got in the car and left.
The second time, I was a little better prepared and took paperwork (birth certs, etc), 2 changes of clothes, basic medical kit, a bush-cooking set, a tent, and a box of non-perishable food and water.

sons, cat if she's around, handbag with bank card/cash, keys, pen, b.p tablets & mobile phone, + file with all important paperwork as essentials.

depending on the crisis, canned/packet food, bottles/cans of drinks, bog roll, tooth/hair brushes, cleansing wipes, toothpaste and spare clothes, duct tape, coupla books.

Wallet, keys, cell phone and a bat pack. I can always grab those and leave the house in 30 seconds. I have a water bottle and a roll of duct tape in the car.

I don't own anything I care about.

We have a backpack filled with a first aid kit, a flashlight, batteries, A blanket, and some ponchos. It would probably be a good idea to have some packages of foods like beef jerky and dried fruit in there, and probably some water bottles. My kids, our pets and I making it out alive in a disaster means more than any material belongings, of course.

You can get several MRE's for less than jerky and dried fruit costs and they're way better for you. Sort of. In terms of balance anyway. Actual taste may be lacking.

For me, the true purpose of such threads is to distinguish the hoarders from the non-hoarders.;)
