The Official Author's Hangout 2015 Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

I, for one, am not guilty of trying the last-day posting strategy. Mine that posted today wasn't dropped by my Muse until Saturday afternoon and was submitted that night--thinking that it might post on Sunday.

I dropped mine in for Sunday also. I like Sundays.

Apart from that, the number of entries for this Summer Lovin contest is a sign that authors want to compete despite the grumbles about the methodology and the bombing.

As far as I am concerned, I will continue to enter the themed contests when I can, not to win, but to get votes and comments on many of my other stories. While this contest has been running some of my very old stories have attracted likes and comments.

It's not despite the "grumbles" by all who continue with the contests for the reasons you cite (I had a reader run all of my Incest/Taboo story file this morning and favorite each and every one, having read the Incest/Taboo one I posted today that is being zapped left and right). For some of us it's despite the obvious signs that a "secret" voting block has taken over the contests--appearing only for the contests now and pumping each other up in the comments and voting and, I'm willing to bet--and I can see the evidence of it--zapping and anonymously slamming others.

Three 1-bombs in about 5 minutes - a new record for me.

I seem to be immune from the frequent 1-bombs and secret cabal voting. Maybe neither group can read what I write, or consider me not worth bothering with.

I do get 1-bombs, but not a campaign of them. They would be wasting their effort on many of my submissions that have never had an H.

Earthworks has fluctuated between 3.4x and 3.6x since it was posted. Who needs to 1-bomb that?

Well, I guess for Lit, it's 750-1,000 words. I think this one came in at 999. Phew!

That feels good! I may not get the votes to be official, I don't think readers tend to like such short stories, but it was fun to write. :)

Just read yours - made me laugh. (I didn't check the category before starting to read so had no idea how it would turn out.)

I originally planned for mine to be 750 words, on the button. So short, I'd get irate comments about how short it was.

But (as oft heard here), it took on a life of its own. Just under 3,200 words in the end. FFS.

Contests draw eyeballs, and I've had a lot of activity on all of my stories because I have an entry in this one.

I haven't. :(

I seem get more votes and comments from interacting on here. Not always good, not always bad, but a bit of feedback is appreciated.

I may be wearing rose-colored glasses (it's been known to happen) but I don't believe in the secret cabal voting, at least not a wholesale, concerted version of it.

I do think, based on my observations of voting on my contest stories, that fan groups both promote their favorite authors and protect them in contests by 1-bombing other stories that seem to be doing well. And I always seem to be associated with the wrong crowd. It's the place to be, on the wrong side of everyone.... except the one or two friends who really count.

Then I suppose there are the personal trolls, and the random hit trolls, and the "I hate Mondays" trolls and...

So far I've seen no spill-over action from my Summer story to the others, but my Summer story has been up for less than 12 hours and my few stories are all in different categories. Probably stupid as a strategy, but I write what I comes out and think of categories pretty much when I post.

I haven't entered the contest ... but my latest story was at a #.6 and ever time it got to .7, I'd get a 1 ... like clockwork ... and then, my first story, sitting at a 4.28 took about 15 to 20 votes to reach 4.30 and what happens? I get a 1 on my recent story and as if to make sure they hit both my nuts, I got a 1 at the same time on my first story, forever stuck at 4.29 probably ....

are intentional 1's common, or am I just seeing things?

I did get an automatic 1 for my story being too long and the guy was nice enough to give me an anonymous email telling me he did that.

I need to put out about 10 more stories so I don't get caught up on these scores.

I am amazed! Laurel posted them all! Thank you muchly, dear Lady of Literotica!!

She most definitely went the extra mile with all the last-minute entries!

Between the "Bitchers & Whiners Club" and the "Tin Foil Hat Society" Laurel (and Manu too) get undeserved abuse heaped on them far more often than the kudos and "Thank you's" they so richly deserve for all the do to keep Lit running and us authors happy.

So, Laurel...knowing you have two main fetishes, here's a little something from me to say "Thanks!" and hopefully put a smile on your face.

Cross-over to older works is much stronger when they're reasonably similar to the new story. If you write a one-off Humor or Horror for a contest, it's not necessarily going to draw much activity on your Romance catalog.

My list as RR is dominated by age-difference stories. When I post one of those, I get a lot of cross-over. If I post a Group Sex story, it's not quite as much -- even when there's an age-difference component in the story.

Come on people. There's always a method to the madness. The best voices need the exposure and the win for when they drop the new anthology next month.

I'm pretty sure all stories that were submitted on Friday or Saturday (possibly Thursday, too) weren't posted until today. I don't think any stories were posted yesterday?

Anyway, some anonymous person left me a comment that said DRE. what does that mean? I'm assuming something rude? :)

All, a bunch were saved for today.

I don't think contest stories get posted on the weekend anymore. They get pre-approved for Monday.

Thanks! It was really fun to write. And not as easy as I thought to get it to 1,000 words. ;)

Google says it means Dr Dre. He's an old school rap artist in the US. Go see Straight Out of Compton in theaters now.

If it's not Dre, than I don't know.

Urban Dictionary says it means "an adjective used to describe anything that is cool and/or dope beyond comprehension. Applicable only to those individuals with the highest levels of swag. Derivative of the popular rapper name Dre and thus is most commonly used as an expression by members of hip hop culture. However, it is sometimes used by a select few individuals who wish they had swag..."

Fantastic! Did you make that up? Wait, don't tell me, I'll just take the comment as a compliment instead of wondering if someone who likes to write in all caps and makes lots of errors thought my story was DRY. :D

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Budump, dum. Bump.

Psssshhh.

Be here all week folks. Try the veal.

You guys are cracking me up. Digital Rectal Exam could be considered a compliment?

Ooh, had a little sweep. It's not made a ha'p'orth of difference to my score, but I've lost a few votes.
