The Official Author's Hangout 2015 Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

As per my comment, I found it too menacing to be Fetish!

Hope you're feeling better after your 'rest'.

What's this about disqualifying yourself?

Thank you for your comment. You could be right that Erotic Horror would have been more appropriate.

The 'rest'? I had one of my few remaining teeth extracted so that my false teeth will fit better. That tooth had been loose for nine months and was jamming on my dental plate. Once the hole has healed I can get new false teeth that fit properly. (all at no cost to the UK's National Health Service)

I started the Authors' Hangout Last Place (tm) Contests to highlight stories that scored very low. It was a contest that depended on authors revealing their own low ratings.

As the originator, and before I started the Last Place (tm) Contest, the frequent low achiever, I disqualifed myself. I found getting very low ratings far too easy!

The prize for winning the Last Place (tm) Contest was nothing but the awe and esteem of your fellow authors at the magnitude of your achievement (and many good stories won it - they weren't popular but they were well written).

How about one more just for the hell of it. :D

My editor wasn't around so you get what you get. ;)

Holy crap! I did it! I submitted a story to a contest!

It wasn't either of the two stories I had planned, but it's something. I've been playing with writing flash fiction, so I'm hoping to start a little series of stories that are 1,000 words or less. Well, I guess for Lit, it's 750-1,000 words. I think this one came in at 999. Phew!

That feels good! I may not get the votes to be official, I don't think readers tend to like such short stories, but it was fun to write. :)

Sunday night is the deadline.

But I think even that is fairly loose. Day late submissions are still accepted, if I recall.

btw, there were no stories posted today (Saturday). Had anyone submitted a story at it was pre-approved for alter?

I've still got 2 more to submit tomorrow.

thanks. i'm galumphing towards the deadline. had other stuff to do and didn't get started until a couple of days ago. it's gonna be rough, but i wanted to put something out there.

I'm a little new to the contest business. But I'm starting to think that posting early is not a smart strategy. I started out with a pretty damn respectable score. But, from midway through the second week, the score has been gliding like a brick. And, during the same period, someone, something - sunspot activity perhaps? - has been knocking off my red H scores with alacrity. Bastards! Not that I care; but you know what I mean. Bastards!

I feel better now. :)

Laurel has gotten in the habit of not posting contest stories on sunday so...

As for scores, has anyone seen any sweeps on their contest stories? I've noted some on other stories but none on the contest.

That's why some authors make it a habit to enter at the very end(and always claiming there is no edge to that:rolleyes:) saves them 10 days of abuse that the first day stories get.

That's why of the contests I've placed in last years Earth Day winner is the one I'm most proud of, it was a day one entry and somehow survived to win.

Of course that was back when a 4.84 could place, even first, this year 4.86's are being left out.

I'm not following mine closely at all, but the once every three days or so I give it a look the score is the same and the vote total has risen somewhat so if there has been one, its been small.

Last contest the sweeps started day one and ran through the length of it, this time nothing.

Maybe this is Laurel's way of trying to screw with the trolls. They don't know when to safely bomb

Its at the top of my shit list.

Nothing like working under pressure.

I managed to go from a plot bunny and 115 words of notes at 10am this morning to a 6700 word, two-pager submitted with 33 minutes to spare.

I did the same crap all through high school and college...start doing the research for term papers the night before they were due.

Oh well...another one is in the mix. Good luck everyone. :)

.

I've submitted 2 also.

A brother/sister story, and an exhibitionist story.

Looks like there's going to be a lot of stories tomorrow.

Managed to squeak mine in as well - 28 minutes to spare. And many thanks to my patient, hard-working, and inspired editor!

That was no strategy to submit at the last moment - it was my barely making the deadline. I'm afraid procrastination is an art form with me... If I was only half that good at writing, I'd win me some contests. ;)

i snuck under the wire, too. real-life stuff pushed me back. it's in no way a contest winner, but it's an entry and gets me exposure (no pun) :D

Well as I predicted to two other members here, today is the last day and lo and behold another last minute entry from the king of the best voices in erotica Tx Tall Tales.

But its better than that

Not one, not two, but three last minute entries.

Now let's face it all three were not finished at once, they did not all have to be last minute. This is another cheap trick aimed at a win.

Two are in mature, one will place I am sure.

Not sure what I find more amusing, that they are this pathetic, or this predictable.

I'm sure they expected this post too, but what the hell, can't disappoint my fan club now can I?

I'm not going to harp on this, or look for another flame war because its pointless and its not like the site will ever do anything about something like this, but I will continue to make a post acknowledging each sneaky maneuver if for no other reason than to show them they're not nearly as clever as they seem to think they are.

Now to sit back and watch the one bombs and anonymous snark fly on my story list.

I must have had one or two 1 bombs in the last 24 hours. Jeanie the Genie was bumping along just retaining the H, until the last few votes took it away.

With 400 votes, which is an amazing total for an oggbashan story, for which I am very grateful, to change the rating that much the latest votes must have been 1s.

Apart from that, the number of entries for this Summer Lovin contest is a sign that authors want to compete despite the grumbles about the methodology and the bombing.

As far as I am concerned, I will continue to enter the themed contests when I can, not to win, but to get votes and comments on many of my other stories. While this contest has been running some of my very old stories have attracted likes and comments.

I'm so bad with it, I got an email from Wikipedia this morning asking if they could use my photo next to the definition for 'procrastination'

I did run across three or four minor goofs with my last-minute speed-scan editing...and one "Ahhhh fuck!" where I suddenly changed one of the character's names in a dialog exchange.

Ohhhhh well...as the old bumper sticker says: Shit Happens!

It's gone from 59 to 77 - 18 new overnight.

Anyone got any recommendations? Or shouldn't I ask?

You can ask, but any recommendations posted on this thread is likely to attract the trolls. Recommendations by PM is safer.

But my second story https://www.literotica.com/s/earthworks is already a troll target. A few more 1-bombs won't make much difference because it started in the 3.xx range and has stayed there. :D

In other news, another member of the greatest voices, just posted their ninth entry.

I, for one, am not guilty of trying the last-day posting strategy. Mine that posted today wasn't dropped by my Muse until Saturday afternoon and was submitted that night--thinking that it might post on Sunday.

I have rarely entered contests, preferring instead to write what I want when I want. You make a valid point here, though. Contests draw eyeballs, and I've had a lot of activity on all of my stories because I have an entry in this one.
