When did "freedom of speech" become freedom from criticism?

This is rampant in social networking, comment sections, and so forth.

Someone says something, gets ripped for it, and responds with: "I'm allowed freedom of speech; leave me alone."

It sure as hell isn't political correctness because most of the folks I see trying to play this card are clearly voting red and profess to hate PC. How did this BS start?

They just wanna yap and are looking for other likewise yappers to confirm their yap, thereby sidestepping actual criticism that would challenge (and in many cases, refute) their purview. But the main caveat is that it has to be done for a wide audience.

It's why even though there is now a dedicated Politics Board, there are two main political yappers in the GB who are vocally obstinate about not posting here because they know their yap will be diminished by posting in a young forum space with less view traffic.

Sometime in the late 80's. It's really taken hold in the last few years now that anyone can be pilloried via social media.

It's the same thing when you hear a certain group of people whine, "You're violating my Constitutional rights", who then proceed to violate someone else's constitutional right by claiming, again, their rights are being violated for having to adhere to the Constitution.

Or, in the world view, a certain country who never lets an opportunity slip by to remind the world how much they have suffered who then proceeds to do the exact same thing to others which was done to them, then whines when people call them out for it.
