There's probably an FAQ about this...

But it's early, I'm on pain meds and my coffee hasn't kicked in yet. So please bear with me. This is not a wonk or a whine, it's just a mechanics of this great site question...

Had a four-part story I submitted a few days ago, it is still Pending. Other stories or chapters of stories of mine submitted after that have been approved and posted since then. What's the process editors have for examining work before posting it?

Further to that, and like I said, I've no doubt there's an FAQ for this, but do I receive a notification concerning rejection if a story is not approved for one reason or another?

Last query- I'm currently using Ubuntu as my laptop's OS and the guidelines for Submissions indicate that *odt is a supported method of document for submission. That being said, I keep getting a warning informing me that my format is unsupported and my submission must be manually converted by an editor before posting.

Am I doing something wrong in my submission work after all?

Hopefully these are straightforward questions requiring quick answers, doubtless most of of the people in this room who respond are already editors and have better things to do in any event.

Thanks for your time!

Are you clicking the pending link and then clicking resubmit? That will push your story to the back of the line again. There is only one person, Laurel, who checks stories and approves them. Whatever her process is, she doesn't share it, which is fine. You could send her a private message (PM) and ask her specifically about that story.

You won't get an email notification, if that's what you mean. You need to check your author's page and see if the story has been approved or rejected. If it's rejected, you can click on the "Rejected" link to see why. Usually that's in the form of a question, e.g., "Is your punctuation incorrect?" or "Are there characters under 18 in a sexual situation?" (paraphrasing)

If you think it's been wrongly rejected, you can resubmit with a note explaining the possible problem.

Not sure, as I have used Windows and am currently on a Mac. However, I've found the easiest way to submit is to copy and paste your text into the submission window. This allows you to preview the story, which uploading a file does not.

Hope that helped. :)

It did indeed

Thank you VERY much for your time in answering. To boot, no, I have not been hitting the Submit button, I've carefully left it alone and just stared at the 'Pending' status, willing it to change with my mind.

I am also glad to hear that I'll be notified by a 'Rejected' status if my story doesn't make the grade. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't, my characters meet the age standards and my punctuation and grammar are solid.

I'll be patient. Thanks again!

There seems to be some sort of glitch in the queue lately that's causing some stories not to show up on Laurel's dashboard. At least, that's what I'm assuming from the other reports of long wait times such as this, and some reports of resolution.

Send her a PM ( you can find her as the thread starter on all the threads in the main contest sub-forum ) and let her know the title of the story so she can look into it.

Anyone who has a story "pending" for more than 4 days should probably do the same. I would almost say 3 days, except I'm giving a little leeway for real-life disasters :)
