And don't you dare blame Common Core Standards (Suggestions)!

Had to help Princess with her first biology homework. Actual premise:

Bart has decided that microwaving mice for ten seconds will make them stronger, so he takes ten mice and microwaves them for 10 seconds each...

Then he performs experiments on them and a non-nuked control set of ten other mice and the student is supposed to identify aspects of the experiment such as dependent and independent variables and evaluate the meaning of the outcomes.

I guess it is assumed that a mouse will survive ten seconds of microwaving and that that is as valid a way of conducting research as ripping a baby apart to get to its innards. Maybe it's just a not-so-subtle effort at desensitizing the young impressionable mind.

Anyone here tried microwaving a mouse?

Anyone here tried microwaving a mouse?

I dipped mice in liquid nitrogen then shattered them on the floor.

Its so cool. They splatter like ice.

no, but I once ate dog food…
the roads were icey and I couldn't go down hill to buy food

That's why we have survival supplies.

;)

I need to get liquid nitrogen for a nifty biology lesson...

come on, guys… .
what's the most disgusting thing you've done? (besides eating rats)
I told you one of mine

I find this all very hard to believe...at the very least...somebody has a sick mind

I find this all very hard to believe...at the very least...somebody has a sick mind

It's absolutely true, and that was just day one.

What, I think, is bothering me is that my HS Biology began with the study of simple cells, types of plants, types of trees, King Philip Came Over From Greek Shores, some dissection, and the various methods of reproduction, etc.

What the focus now seems to be on, and that could change, is process. How to dream up studies and hypothesize about facets of science sans the basic building blocks of Science.

When I was little I tried those doggie bacon treats. They don't taste like bacon at all.

I found this. I hope it helps.

Identifying Parts of a Controlled Experiment
:
For each of the following
descriptions, identify: hypothesis, independent variable, dependent variable(s),
control, and any factors that would need to be constant.

A scientist believes that mice exposed to microwaves will be extra strong. He decided to perform the following experiment: He carefully selected 20 mice of equal size and weight. He placed 10 mice in a microwave for 10 seconds. The other 10 mice were not exposed to microwaves.
To test strength, he placed a heavy block of wood over the food
dish. He found that 8 out of 10 mice that were exposed to microwaves were able to push the block away to get to their food. Five of 10 mice that were not exposed to microwaves were able to push the block away to get to their food

Hypothesis:
Independent Variable:
Dependent Variable:
Control group:
Constants:

Hypothesis: Mice that are exposed to microwaves will be stronger than mice that are notexposed to microwaves.

Indpendent Variable: exposure to microwaves

Dependent Variable: strength of mice, measuring ability to push wooden block

Control Group: mice not exposed to microwaves

Constants: species of mice, size/age of mice, type of food, size
of block

Oh, so you weren't really asking a question...

nevermind the previous post then. but that is one sick scientist...he's creating Hulk Mice

?!?
How old were the kids?
Can you imagine the horror of parents: The more impressionable kids going home and trying an experiment of their own… .

High schoolers here are usually 14-18/19 yr olds

and then the horror of the science teacher as he/she tries to explain they weren't ACTUALLY expected to try this at home.

That was pretty much word for word except Scientist was replaced with Bart Simpson.

Who advocates microwaving mice for any length of time?

That's proper biology? That's Day 1 stuff?

I was exploring a theme.

No one admonished the class not to try this at home.

I can get it as a study for setting up and performing an experimant, what I can't get is the example experiment used...

plus...who wants 20 mice running around, especially 10 of them half cooked.

who came up with 10 seconds as a reasonable amount of cooking time...Martha Stewart or Giada

How about being taught to set up an experiment before you've learned a lick of biology?

Maybe some idiot will test sandstone in the microwave to see if it gets stronger.

10 half cooked mad as hell HULK MICE!!

not me, nosiree!

when that trap snaps I don't want a HULK mouse thinking..."cool workout, Bro!"

Is this building on the previous studies of cell structure, etc?

No. The previous Science class was a poorly designed ADHD-style scattershot of chemistry terms, physics formulas and the study of geometrical shapes (without ever having been introduced to the basics of Geometry, especially the proofs that we were required to memorize in junior high school).

Princess could not, to save he life, describe the difference between mitosis and halitosis.

Just teaching to the test to prove to the Federal Government they are good little educators who deserve more free government cash No wonder they turn out so many dummies!

Okay...somewhat off-topic.

My sisters are teachers. I can't have a simple conversation with the older of the 2 about the education system. All she can say is "it's all about bashing the classroom teachers". I try and sometimes succeed in pointing out that it ISN'T about bashing teachers, it's about expecting teachers to teach subjects with IMO off the wall concepts that even they don't fully understand. Until the teachers raise hell, it's not going to change. To say she is defensive would be an understatement. She's downright narrow minded sometimes. She can't seem to understand, that I don't want to criticize, I want to understand and there is a HUGE difference.

Last year, the younger, less narrow-minded, of the 2 sisters was telling me about the 'new' testing system. The classroom teacher she was working with was discouraged from trying to introduce the concepts to be used in the new tests to her class. The rationale being, the powers that be WANTED the test scores low to mediocre, theorizing that those initial scores gave them a more workable starting point than high scores would. This drove the teacher AND sis nuts as they are both over-achievers and wanted their students to excel even if the BOE did not.

It's the system not the teachers, that needs overhauled.
