It seems like there is an effort from the establishment left to eliminate the alternative left, at least that portion of it which is independent thinking or when it had different views than the establishment liberals.
For example, the welfare "scientists" in academia are trotted out to attack the alternative left on holistic health issues more and more. Establishment Democrats in California, along with their media friends, led the effort to take vaccination freedom away from parents and families. The majority of the vaccination freedom movement was broadly speaking, "on the left" of the political spectrum, by most accounts. New Agers, holistic health, anti-Big Pharma activists, etc. These are traditional parts of the left, at least by conventional definitions. Who led the attack on them in this case? Establishment Democrats and the welfare "scientists" in academia who rely on the government teat for their money. Top Dems in the legislature openly worked with "Big Pharma" to push the bill through.
We also saw the sidelining of union and leftist opposition to the latest free trade deal, pushed through by the Democrat administration. Opponents of "free" trade are ignored mostly, rather than made fun of like vaccination freedom advocates, but the result was the same.
That's why I've always talked about the "establishment left" or "establishment liberals" rather than just "leftists." There is a different, and sadly, the wrong part of the left seems to be winning. We all lose.
