Do mods ever police reader comments?

Had a strange happening a day or two ago. There were new comments left on two of my stories, which I saw in the morning when I got up. They were rude and insulting, but nothin' I ain't already seen many times already. :) There wasn't anything distinguishing about them, compared with other derogatory remarks I've read in the past. Fast forward to later that same day and the comments have completely disappeared. I know that even though I hadn't had my morning coffee at that time I first saw them, I'm positive I didn't remove them myself. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

It happens to me and others have reported it as well. I think it's another reader who has clicked on the "report" button and pointed to what the administrators agree are unreasonable comments.

It has happened to me as well, mainly for advertising spam or off-site links.

I had a comment of mine deleted twice and it was a real answer to a real question. Nothing rude about it ... the asker wanted a 'yes' or a 'no' so I gave him a no to show how silly that question was. The mod thought their Board was too serious for that kind of response.

So, yeah, it does happen.

Of course, authors can delete comments on their own stories.

I didn't used to do it until I got a dozen or so in a day from one anonymous who didn't like my subject matter - so why keep reading it?

Freedom of speech is becoming an 'at will' state here.

Pretty ridiculous when you go through the daily LW comments and see what's left here:rolleyes:

Or maybe the Mod thought your reply had nothing to do with the feedback. :)

After the second deletion, I was sent an email and we had a conversation. In the end no harm done, but I believe my comment could have easily stayed on the bored or an email could have been sent first asking what I meant by my answer to the OP's question, but if I'm going to hold a grudge over it, I'd need to have my head examined.

I do believe that an email should be sent to the poster when their comment is taken down the first time..

Edit: The OP ended their post with 'Should his sister help him?' ... my response, 'No. The end.' ... I gave him feedback to the question he asked. My comment was fine given the Op's wording.

Either way, some Mods do police and in my case, I'm sure the Mod was doing it to keep the thread alive & perhaps save the OP from being discouraged by my hilarious response.

Freedom of speech doesn't apply to private servers. And if you deconstruct the rules to find the places that at least American law gives you free speech, relative to where people congregate, it's actually surprisingly restrictive.

People think of the internet as a place of free speech, but even if you factor out places like China, the vast, vast majority of the net is private property and you speak at someone else's suffrage.

By the way, I don't think the Mods here have any connection to the story file itself at all. I think that if a comment on a story has disappeared that the author didn't erase, that it's Laurel doing it.

Now that I read this ... Mod/reader comment ... I'm thinking forum, but do they really mean story page?

From what I've seen, you are correct, Laurel and possible Manu hold sway over the story side of things.

Sometimes from what I have observed, a poster will get gigged for racial remarks or hate crime type remarks and everything they have posted will vanish.

Right.

Uh huh.

Either Laurel agrees it should go and erases or she doesn't agree it should go and ignores the report--just like when a story is reported as not conforming to the rules.

Like threads that are removed including all posts, I think dubious comments are removed along with all responses to that comment.

Erase one of my posts and expect one-bombs for you and all your friends. I never one-bombed but in the last 2 months I do it liberally. Annoy me and expect it; goes for your friends, too. The friend of my enemy gets her ass kicked, too.

To bad Laurel doesn't post stories here...well not under her name. And I don't see her having a lot of time to write anything.

So, Jimbo, you have nothing to one bomb if she deletes a comment off one of your stories.

PILOT is the default victim.

Be careful of assumptions, James. A couple of years ago you one-bombed a story of mine you hadn't even read, and left a derogatory comment as well, all in retaliation for what you assumed was a one-bomb from an alt you presumed was mine. I never one-bombed your story, and I have no alts. I barely can manage the one persona I do have. So, please don't jump to conclusions. I'm not particularly fond of pilot either, but I don't assume he's the go-to guy for assigning blame.

JBJ's just trying to diddle me and see how far he can go with others razzing me but giving him a pass for his shit. He doesn't have the energy to one-bomb 776 stories, and I don't have the time from writing and editing to either read the stories here or vote on them. It wouldn't work on his stories anyway. The voting is turned off on over half of them and there's no need to vote down most of the rest--others have already pretty much done to him what he says he's doing to mine.

JAMESBJOHNSON, 6/26/15: I've been bombing the shit outta your stories just for the fuck of it. Youll never see a 3 again!

It comes off as no surprise that sonovabitch has been 1-bombing other's stories. You can't expect anything higher from a delusional maggot.

I had one deleted, my only problem was that I never got a chance to read it, just got a message that it had been deleted, no reason stated.

Kinda wish I had a chance to read it and find out what was said.

Who sent you a message that a comment had been deleted from one of your stories? I've noticed comments deleted from my stories (comments I didn't bother to erase myself), but I never received a message from anyone saying they'd been dropped.

The message appears in your submissions area for recent activity e.g. comments left and favorites, even after the comment has been deleted.
