You probly didn't know it but our prison system get underway after the Civil War. Before then folks spent time in county jails and were hanged for felonies. Prisons weren't needed.

After the war, tho, blacks were on their own and resorted to crime to survive. Slavery was illegal so states passed conscript labor laws that leased black criminals to planters, mines, railroads, lumber companies etc. for fee's. Conscript labor camps morphed into state farms, then state prisons.

In UK jails, black men are over-represented by comparison with their proportion of the general population. (an aside -Romanians are massively over-represented, far more than black men.)

It is a concern to the justice system and to black community representatives. It isn't just that young black men commit proportionately more crime - they do, but they are also much more likely to be sentenced to imprisonment.

Some of it might be caused by gang culture and lack of positive role models, or the lack of and/or failure of alternative community options for young black men who commit crime.

But most of it seems to start with the reluctance of black boys, and their parents, to engage with education. That means more unqualified and/or unemployable young men who see no future as a wage-earner.

As with any complicated problem no one answer is the right one. There are dozens of reasons...

Because our justice system tends to be harsher to blacks who are arrested and tends to offer them prison sentences when white people might receive fines. Because black people in the US tend to be poorer and therefore unable to pay bonds and are often jailed as a result. Because black social support systems tend to be less developed (for one reason or another) and therefore if they don't have money they tend to resort to crime more quickly, and if they get caught, they won't have family to help them, or get them lawyers.

The problem is that as with any complicated problem with a lot of different causes there is not an easy solution, nor is the problem likely to be solved in the immediate future. It will likely take years and many short measures, in my experience any knee jerk solutions tend to make problems vastly worse, or introduce new worser problems.

By "territory" do you mean street corners or other places where rival gangs fight for the ability to sell drugs?

I think you will find that people of any race or ethnicity who go to grad school, or even who graduate from college, tend to not be hoodlums.

No it's mostly just female....sure being white has some privilege too. But a vag carries way more privilege with the criminal justice system in general than skin color.

From murder to child custody and speeding tickets....the two are not even comparable. Racial discrimination of every kind is center stage and fingers get pointed regularly, it's shameful and society is absolutely treating it as such. Discussion is being forced as a result and change is happening, has been for a while now. Female privilege is institutionalized, promoted and cheered. As far as OP goes it's a combo of a lot of things....historical ass fucking for most of the nations history, broken criminal justice system, poverty, education, cultural norms, racism. According to the data I posted blacks are six times more likely to be murdered than whites. They are eight times more likely to be murders than whites. What accounts for the difference is blacks murdering non blacks.

Even when Orientals and whites (including Jews) are poor, as they often are, they have a lower crime rate than blacks.

Some made their way into other cities,... but the majority remained in New York, settling in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, [which was] a neighborhood of the poor. Sociologists, with their impressive charts showing the number of toilets (or lack of the), the number of people per room, the low per capita income, paint a dismal picture of the Lower East Side Jewish slum. But their charts do not capture its uniqueness. Though it bred tuberculosis and rheumatism, it did not breed crime and venereal disease. The late political scientist James Q. Wilson debunked the theory that crime results from poverty, or that redistributive government programs can reduce crime rates by alleviating poverty, by pointing out that “crime rose the fastest in this country at a time when the number of persons living in poverty or squalor was declining.” He added: “I have yet to see a ‘root cause’ or to encounter a government program that has successfully attacked it.”

Children in single-parent households are burdened not only with profound economic disadvantages, but are also far likelier to eventually get into trouble with the law. As a Heritage Foundation analysis notes, youngsters raised by single parents, as compared to those who grow up in intact married homes, are much more likely to be physically abused; to be treated for emotional and behavioral disorders; to smoke, drink, and use drugs; to behave aggressively and violently; to engage in criminal activity; and to be arrested for a juvenile crime. According to the National Fatherhood Initiative, 60% of rapists, 72% of adolescent murderers, and 70% of long-term prison inmates are men who grew up in fatherless homes.

True... But economic deprivation does lead to harsher sentences.
