The Confederacy is the symbol of racist losers.

Could have starved them out.

Perhaps. But Charleston was full of real fanatics, and there wasn't really any strong command and control structure, so matters escalated rapidly. There were independent militias firing on the fort for a while before the "official" attack began.

Of course. Even those that strongly objected to the inhumanity of slavery did so because they found it cruel, not because they understood that the accident of being born in Africa made one no lesser man.

People always talk about the 3/5ths compromise as if it was the slave states that wanted slaves to be counted as less than. The slave states wanted them counted as people because it benefited them. The North wanted slaves to count as zero.

That's one of the greatest misconceptions about American slavery.

Yes, Charleston had been a hotbed for secession for many decades. The whole state, really. Started over taxes.

The dispensation of federal property was a very serious concern. The lion's share of federal revenues came from duties collected at custom's houses, one of the largest of which was in Charleston (Other major customs houses were located in Savannah and New Orleans). South Carolina, desiring those revenues for themselves, took the position that all federal property should revert to the state, and demanded withdrawal from Sumter to create a fait accompli that would prove that point. When the federals refused to withdraw, they had no other options other than to fire on the fort, or cede the right of the federal government to maintain control of all federal property in the state, including the customs houses and post offices.

Pretty valid point. From the standpoint of meeting upcoming troop payroll and the like, customs and tariffs were the only source of revenue for the Feds at that time.

The question remains, why didn't Lincoln and the North wave goodbye and good riddance to the South?

~ crickets ~

Triple bonus question (although it shares the very same answer):

Why didn't the anti-slave states refuse to voluntarily create a Union with the pro-states in Philadelphia during the Convention which was underway on this day exactly 228 years ago?

Same reason at people who complain about burger-flippers and Walmart greeters not being paid "living wages" patronize those establishments and would stop doing do based on prices if the prices reflected higher wages.

Same reason people today buy textiles sewed by slave labor*

*checks the label on my Calvin Klein T-shirt. Yep. Made in Pakistan.

The North depended on the slave labor in the South for affordable raw materials. This is why the Northern Democrat 1%er industrialists did not want the Republicans discouraging the new territories from becoming slave states.

America needs to man up and suck it up! Time to stop being such the obama sissy.

bad enough we have a cowardly cuckold as POTUS ... this 'political correctness' is pure pig shit

cameltoe and mooseknukle are not attractive

"zero" as in since the slave states intentionally enslaved them, slaves should not be counted in regards to Congressional representation since slave states, of course, didn't permit their slaves to vote...

...the slave states wanted their slaves to be accorded 1 citizen pseudo-representation so that their masters could elect even more Representatives who'd continue to champion slavery itself; they got 3/5 of exactly what they wanted.

The anti-slave states' greatest crime against this nation was even agreeing to voluntarily unionize with pro-slave states in the first place...

...their compromise of 3/5 from their beginning point of "zero" only underlines that betraying fact.

Mitt Romney Calls On South Carolina To Remove Confederate Flag At Statehouse

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/20/mitt-romney-confederate-flag_n_7627776.html

"Mitt Romney on Saturday called on South Carolina to take down the Confederate flag flying outside its statehouse.

The former Republican presidential nominee has long been opposed to the flag, saying in a 2008 debate that it "shouldn’t be flown" and "that’s not a flag I recognize."

President Obama approved of Romney's position."

I hope South Carolina listens and takes heed.

Well done, Mitt.

^^^They who claim others are racist may be one themselves... Regardless, are certainly losers.

From the other side of the Atlantic I have three things to say about this thread:

1. The Confederacy was not just about slavery. There were many causes of dispute that lead to the American Civil War. Slavery was one of those, but NOT the only one.

2. The Confederate Flag, Battle Ensign or whatever it WAS, is now associated with supporting white supremacy and slavery. That is unfair to those principled people who fought for the Confederate cause, but that is its modern assocation.

3. In many parts of the world the Confederate Flag is just seen as an alternative to the Stars and Stripes and is just 'American'. Many do not see or know the difference.

Ogg you hit the nail on the head. Flags are a symbol and symbols can have different meanings to different people based on their experiences, views, education, morality or upbringing.

The confederacy had different flags, but the stars and bars was the most popular. I expect people glommed onto this one because it was the battle flag of the Army of Virginia and a symbol of resistance.

I agree that everything Ogg said is true, but I've reached the conclusion the flag should be taken down at the state capitol because it is clearly seen as a symbol of white racism by many, and that will not change. South Carolina has a significant black population, and their thoughts and feelings should not be disregarded, especially after this incident in Charleston.

Have you alerted Oprah yet of the "conclusion" you've "reached", touby?

You live in Hoosierville, bozo...

...what business does your democratic nose have in the republican business of the citizens of South Carolina?

about the same you have with telling what a woman has to do with their body

or is it " different" when it comes to you?

Of course it's different. After all, Gawd said so. Now run along and be a good little brood mare before someone stones you or sells you into slavery, because Gawd said that was OK too.
