Some Great Advice for Writers

Being a fan of television writing (as it's far better than most of the garbage foisted upon people in the multiplexes these days) and being a big Doctor Who fan I'd thought I'd post this interview with Show runner Steven Moffat.

It's not all related to that show if you're not a fan, but about his writing.

He's a great interview subject and it's a short interview at just ten minutes, his advice to anyone writing is a great bit of advice.

It's not hatred. It's the old "show me" concept. Why should I give credence to anyone who hasn't shown me anything of their own abilities yet?

Thank you. I'm glad you like it. He's a very articulate gentleman and not into throwing around opinions, he just gives his ideas and advice based on common sense and experience.

I realize that the Internet is the world of surrealism and of "easy button" expertise, but I still think it's common sense to establish some credibility in a subject before posting as some sort of expert in that subject--even on the Internet. But then, there's always a high factor of gullibility in play on the Internet, isn't there?

I enjoyed the interview. The only part that I couldn't bond with was the part about writers' block.

When I first started writing years ago, I had writers' block. It was then that I realized that I had writers' block because I hadn't lived enough of life to have stories to write.

Then, out of the blue, when I was back working in Boston for a furrier as a controller and then for a modeling agency as their business manager on Newbury Street, I couldn't type fast enough. The people that I met and the experiences that I had gave me dozens of stories to write.

Now, whenever I'm stuck on a story, just before going to bed, I'll think of the story. Allowing my brain to percolate the story while I sleep, when I awaken the next morning, I have everything that I need.

Suffice to say, I don't have writers' block. I only write when inspired and seemingly, I'm inspired all the time, even when writing these posts on the forum board.

It took me a long time to open the window of inspiration, 5 minutes at a time when I first started writing years ago, now I can leave it open for hours. Inspired writing is always the best writing.

He could have simply told me what he found, but nope had to show me the body along with the head which was separate.

When he walked off I found myself wishing whatever got the raccoon could get him next, guys a moron.

Moffat is one of the most successful writers in the UK. That's a matter of public record. It seems bizarre to slam the OP for linking to an interview with a notable writer talking about writing, unless this is an extension of some feud from elsethread.

(I'm not actually a fan of Moffat's work since Coupling, some of it makes me grind my teeth in exasperation, but I can't deny his success.)

Moffat is one of the most successful writers in the UK. That's a matter of public record. It seems bizarre to slam the OP for linking to an interview with a notable writer talking about writing, unless this is an extension of some feud from elsethread.

(I'm not actually a fan of Moffat's work since Coupling, some of it makes me grind my teeth in exasperation, but I can't deny his success.)

No feud its just Pilot's insecurities and jealousy coming out because people are discussing an actual successful writer and not paying any attention to him.

I know that sounds like pure snark, but its accurate.

hone your skills sounds like you want to learn more and so does your reference to that interview. I assumed you wanted others to read it and comment, positive or negative.
