Dennis Hastert, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, has been charged with lying to the F.B.I. and making cash withdrawals from banks in a way that was designed to hide that he was paying $3.5 million to someone for his “misconduct” from years ago, a federal indictment released on Thursday said.

This is what one of the Republicans who trolled President Bill Clinton over his own tawdry and inappropriate (but consensual) sex scandal is now accused of violating the law to cover up. And by accused, I mean indicted.

He took the speaker's gavel after Newt Gingrich stepped down following party losses in the 1998 congressional elections, and after GOP leaders' first choice to replace him, Congressman Bob Livingston of Louisiana, stepped aside after revelations of extramarital affairs.

Hastert resigned from Congress in 2007 and has been serving as a lobbyist since then.

Hastert was indicted Thursday in connection with charges that he tried to hide cash withdrawal requirements and lied to the FBI about it.

Update-
Kim Nerheim, a spokeswoman for the United States attorney’s office, said Friday that Mr. Hastert’s case had been assigned to Judge Thomas M. Durkin of Federal District Court, who will schedule an arraignment for the former speaker, perhaps as early as next week.

Preliminary bail in Mr. Hastert’s case was set at $4,500, according to court documents.
