The Dennis Hastert thread

Dennis Hastert started his prison term today, reporting to the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota. His new name is 47991-424.

I wish he wasn't in my neighborhood. Why can't he be moved to Guantanamo? It's not a military prison, according to him.

"These aren't military people. They don't belong to a country, they don't wear a uniform, they're not part of an army," Hastert said. "It's a unique situation and we'll have to deal with it in a unique way."

The time has come for this great elder statesman to have his own thread. He was Speaker Of the House from 1999 to 2006, the longest time ever held by a Republican.

I think we'll be hearing more about him in the days and weeks ahead.

Another great political leader from that state of Ill...hum, didn't that obama come from there?

The Hastert rule was an informal, yet real, doctrine followed by Dennis Hastert during his eight years as the longest-serving Republican speaker of the House of Representatives. He would not allow any bills proposed by the Democrats (the minority party) to come to the floor for a vote unless a majority of his party agreed with it. Even if the bill would have passed with all Democrat votes and say 50 Republican votes, Hastert wouldn't bring the bill to a vote. He was quoted as saying, “When you start making deals when you have to get Democrats to pass the legislation, you are not in power anymore.”

Hastert echoed the sentiments of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, who said Tuesday that critics are "misinformed" and America's priority is interrogating them to get information to prevent attacks -- not determining if they qualify as POWs.

Hastert will be required to turn in his civilian clothes and wear prison garb. He will be allowed a radio (with headphones), five books and two decks of playing cards, but personal computers are not allowed, according to the inmate orientation guide.

Imprisoned former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert has asked a Kendall County judge to not only reject a sexual abuse victim's breach-of-contract lawsuit, but also to make the man pay back $1.7 million in secret hush-money payments.

"Mr. Hastert has decided that rather than live up to his promise to compensate his victim for his molestation and resulting injury, he will ask his victim to pay him," attorney Kristi Browne said. "He admits to agreeing to make payments, but then denies that it is an agreement that he has to keep."

Hastert, 75, is due to be paroled in August.
