Do you Americans let people die if they can't afford hospital fees?

Liverpool Care Pathway, enough said.

The NHS is being slowly but very surely ripped apart by greedy bastards and their Westminster puppets.

Hospitals in the US are not allowed to turn away patients just because they don't have any money. Anything else you've heard is a lie.

Ok. That's always been the case? And if you haven't a welfare state as such who pays for it?...

For people that need critical care, emergency rooms are required by law to treat people, regardless of finances.

That doesn't mean that people don't die, because not all conditions are acute or emergencies.

Unfortunately that means that people that are uninsured may never get help for a chronic condition, like diabetes, that requires daily care and help. Without that daily care and help, and with noncompliance or lack of access to help, yes, people die.

So knife in the chest - you won't die. Emergency room treats you.

Diabetic crises - yup, they'll stabilize your blood sugar and send you home, or back on the street, in which case poverty, loss of chronic care and potential loss of limb, circulation and other complications...yeah, that'll get you dead...eventually...and painfully.

I don't think so. For sure Labour fucked up under Blair with their terrible consultants but they're gone now. Sadly people are living much longer and our tiny island is vastly over populated so it's a bottomless pit.

Is that right? As you haven't our wonderful NHS?...

so you are a lazy fucker that wants your neighbor to pay your medical bill.

awesome, nice to know you are a retard

psst, you have a shit health care system as compared to America's. maybe this is why all you people in the UK have shitty teeth?

But isn't type 2 diabetes self inflicted? Just being objective...

a social healthcare system is the worse idea, EVER. maybe if your kind had ... jobs?

and who is the greedy bastard, a working person or someone like you demanding free health insurance?

But isn't type 2 diabetes self afflicted? Just being objective...

Diabetes is just an example, and there is type I, type II and insipidus. Some types of diabetes are entirely genetic and aren't influenced by lifestyle changes.

So the main drawback to being not insured isn't really that you won't get care so much as that if you don't have insurance, the emergencies can always be treated, but you can't get the follow up or the maintenance you might need, so some people only see the hospital via the emergency room.

There are a lot of clinics and charities and preventive care programs in many hospitals run through community outreach, but not everyone has one of those near them, has the education or the motivation to participate.

Well someone like you perhaps who puts money before humanity? ;)

I have a job, worst luck, and have always paid my way.

duranman - it has nowt to do with individual political parties at all. Sure labour fucked up to an extent but then when they walked in they had a hell of a job after decades of conservative mismanagement of it's own (and will do again whether they win the election in two weeks, 5 years or later). These fucks don't care about healthcare, they care about making money for their friends and relatives. Healthcare has become as big a money maker as defence/energy and is just as unscrupulous.

I'm all for a welfare state out of kindness for situations out of someone's control. But I have a huge problem with the system being abused by those with self inflicted problems. I wont get specific as it normally upsets. Suffice to say cunts like Jackoffking can fuck right off....

My other gripe is people as young as their 40's and 50's, who should still have amazing physiques, who are grossly overweight and expect us to help them. Nobody in Belsen was fat so what's their problem?...

I think you're missing the sheer size and scale of America.

We have a lot of obese and out of shape people.

We have a lot of people who are perfectly healthy and take good care of themselves.

We have a lot, a LOT of people, lots of diversity.

The reality about health care in America is that we have some of the most cutting edge and expensive therapies available and medicine is now extremely expensive...because science.

Medical care in the past might have been given a syrup of Opium for all your snake oil needs.

Now medical care might include a machine or a pill that might cost thousands of dollars a pop to keep you alive, and you need that every week, or every day.

It's not like any other time in history.

If you want the best care in the world, you come to America.

Unfortunately if you don't have money and you're in America it's possible you won't get care. It's also possible that you will get care.

People can smoke themselves to death, people can eat themselves to death, people can abuse themselves to death. That doesn't mean that the medicine has failed them, that means they've made a choice about how they want to die, or more realistically, how they want to live, usually.

actually, uk teeth rate petty high. statistically, our kids have significantly fewer cavities than American teeth.

i'm pretty much never ill and, like most people I know, the attitude is more that I don't mind my taxes paying for my sick neighbour. a recent survey found that most brits would be willing to have money added to their tax bill if it aided the NHS. plus, the massive buying power of the NHS means almost everything costs the NHS less here than it would cost a hospital there.

not that you'll read any of this... but i'm bored.

The problem with that attitude is that, again, it's about putting money before human beings. You might say that's fair, cos money is limited, but if you understand the international banking system you will understand money is only limited for you and I, not the rich elite.

Secondly, everyone in some form does certain things that can manifest in injury/health problems which we pay for. Sports injuries account for loads of wasted money, illness resulting from stress directly caused by work accounts for masses of wasted money. Where do you draw the line?

I totally understand where you're coming from, but I'd much rather live in a world where we care for all and accept some aren't contributing enough than a selfish world where we deny many for the lack of contribution from the few. Give people the means for happiness and a feeling of self worth and more often than not they'll respond. Judge, vilify or punish people and you'll drive them away.

Edit: one other thing, even the health services and scientists still can't decide what constitutes a healthy lifestyle (only yesterday they decided exercise doesn't reduce obesity and a month back they said obesity can help reduce dementia) - so who are we to determine who is entitled to care based on information now that may be changed later?

Some Americans just love to injure themselves:

It's not a sex offender's thread, it's an "alleged" sex offender's thread.

Did you or did you not post on the GB that, as an adult woman, you knowingly conducted an online sexual relationship with a 1+7+6-year-old minor?

Did you or did you not post on the GB that, as an adult woman, you then met-up with that minor when he was 8+5+3 and fooled-around with him in the front seat of a car?

.....

It's only costs that much here.....NO one knows why the same damn pill from the same manufacturer and the same lot coast 0.50 cents in Mexico....and 1500 bucks in the US.

Why the same damn inhaler that cost 10g's in the US only cost 10 bucks ANYWHERE else on the planet but America?

Political/economic fuck fuck games...that's why....

On a national scale there is absolutely NO reason we should be paying ANYWHERE NEAR what we do for what we get. It's a gigantic fuckin' rip off....a SCAM. As in we should have LUXURY top of the line care and still have like 65% of our HC budget left over.

plus, the massive buying power of the NHS means almost everything costs the NHS less here than it would cost a hospital there.

In america they get the discount and then raise the price they charge you to widen profit margins.

those that are pro "welfare state" are not successful people

we need to end welfare and make people accountable. get a job, put skin in the game. if not, we should put these less fortunates into camps

spot the fuck on!

GlaxoSmithKleine and their various so-called competitors rip the fuck out of humanity - they don't care if you live or die!

Some good points. Maybe somewhere there's a compromise

It's more complicated than that.

Yes, there's a lot of greed, but you have to consider the FDA process of getting something legitimately approved for general market sale. It's a nightmare, an absolute nightmare. It has broken lots of companies, because you have to do research for years and then pay for a huge amount of testing. It's a necessary process, because it works.

It often costs less other places because there aren't copyright law as there is here. Without the monster profits there wouldn't be monster research, and monster research is what validates the fact that America has the best medical treatment and people come here for treatment, studies and advancement in fields they can't get elsewhere.

"West Wing" said it best:

TOBY: The pills cost 'em four cents a unit to make.

JOSH: You know that's not true. The second pill cost 'em four cents; the first pill cost 'em four hundred million dollars.

if the UK keeps going in the direction ... and the islamic issues continue, lets review this question in 5-10 years.

Sadly, here in america the obama party has given people option to go on welfare. we have 2-10 generations that have never had a job. they live in government housing, eat government food, have 2-10 government issued obama iphones, have free energy. screw that, these people need to be in a camp or dumpster
