One of the most often stated reasons for the increase in gun ownership is 'taking personal responsibility' for ones own life. And that part of the NRA message IS getting through. The police are not your personal protectors and they are rarely near by when bad shit happens. They show up after the fact, take pictures and fill out reports. Without the means to protect yourself you are still a dead victim.

living in a country where gun control has been tighter for longer, I may be speaking from a position of more safety/luck and certainly I'd never choose to own a gun (btw, no better to own a rifle to shoot animals either!), but IMO no government official has the right to more power than a citizen.

You only say that because your dinner shows up in a box/bag, and if you eat meat you're an even bigger hypocrite as you pay someone else to not only do your killing for you behind closed doors you also have the animals raised in likely horrifyingly cruel conditions.
There are a whole list of reasons why subsistence hunting is better on a number of issues from ethics to nutrition.
