I'm not quite sure I understand the implications, but this is causing a certain fluttering in various dovecotes:-

Europe could be drowned in 'worthless pop culture' thanks to EU copyright plans

Does this sort of idiocy happen in the 'States ?

Not in the same way as in Europe.

US States have great control and legal powers over their constituencies.


I work in both environments and find the EU swamp crammed with country politicians, often from countries who are new to democracy and no with concept of the importance of separation between State and Federal.

Copyright in the USA must be applied for and THEN applies throughout the country. This EU contrivance is just a mess. How Is my Latvian love poem going to be protected in Greece?

"Worthless pop culture" is wonderful stuff. I have no problem ignoring it. The worse it gets, the more it will be ignored. Darwinian rules will apply. See, it'll all work out.

BTW in social sciences 'culture' is what people do and 'technology' is how we do it. If enough people embrace "worthless pop culture" then history will change. Again. It'll fall into disfavor, then be ignored for decades, then become retro and collectible. It'll be worth something in another half-century or so.

I can assure that we in the USA don't concern ourselves with worthless pop culture. On fact, a lot of is don't gots no cultoor at all! We jus' white trash, got no concern for cultoor. Well, a man know about rifles, shotgun and pistols, includin' proper ammo for each, knives, fishin' gear, that sorta thing. We nights buy a bottle a Wild Turkey, impress the neighbors, but I prefer my poteen in Mason jars. You kin have you' Rolls, I gots a pickup with a twin turbo 4.7 Lincoln.
Anyhow, we don't gots much cultoor. (Do got indoor plumbing!)
