it's been three years since i put the last one in the ground. wasn't sure i'd want to go through it all again but a woman can only provide so much companionship. unconditional devotion isn't necessarily part of that.

Get a whippet. They are smallish, almost silent, don't eat much, and are as dumb as a bag of hammers, so you can always feel superior.:)

Or a greyhound, even dumber than a whippet but larger and faster. Would that make them dumber than two bags of hammers or 1/2 a bag of hammers?

Both breeds tend to have nice dispositions.

that's what I got. brain dead little ninny :)

Settled then. I guess we're dropping a sighthound off at Bert's house.

Look at how tiny their heads are! Cute though.

Now, my blockheaded dog on the other hand is way too smart for her own good.

Go big and lovable...get a Pit Bull...stay away from the blues, they have been so inbred that they are completely wacko.

Stick with a mixed breed if you can...Lab/Pit, Rottie/Pit... or a pure bred.

You won't regret it. I've had several over the years, they are loyal and protective, yet sociable when taught to be early in life.

Watch Pit Bulls & Parolees on Animal channel.

They aren't just for Gangsters.

foolish advice unless you know his personal circumstances. large, powerful dogs should only be owned by people with the mental ability to control them, enough space to comfortably house them, enough money to sufficiently feed them, and ideally the physical strength to restrain them if something goes wrong.

that's part of the reason why shelters are full of them.

Go for a Jack Russell .

that's just mean.

actually, i love jack russells. they're super fucking smart and that's awesome. sadly, that's also one of their biggest faults when you combine it with the fact that they just don't give a fuck.

Laughs.

I am going to be turning that conundrum over in my head for a while.

Pit Bulls are nothing like they are portrayed in the news.

Barring a Pit, a beagle is your next choice...although they do suffer from separation anxiety and will try to dig their way out of the house...through the carpet, wood floor, etc.

yes, i'm fully aware of that. and that has nothing to do with the points i made, which apply to all dogs but more so large breeds.

So what you are saying here, if I understand your advice, is that he should get either a mixed breed or a pure bred.

That seems reasonable.

rescue a pound dog!

we just adopted a 4 year old great dane/lab mix. she is the biggest softie i've ever met. afraid of the cat, gentle around the kids, a snuggle bug. the old man dog is in love. he's been depressed lately, but the last few days, since she's been here, his whole demeanor has changed. he's got the pep back in his step. she follows me everywhere, and is very smart and well behaved. i am in love.

i sure don't want someone's sloppy seconds. you never know what the dog has been thorough or when/if it will "snap."

sometimes you now. well trained dogs from ideal homes, but the owner got cancer or lost their job or dropped dead or something. sometimes rescue dogs come with a full history.

we've rescued several dogs over the years (none have been breeder puppies), and only one dog was abused so bad that it "snapped." we had to rehome her to someone without children, looking for a guard dog. after learning a lot from that experience and trusting my own gut, i feel confident in the decision to adopt this girl. i researched a lot about the breeds i was interested in, then waited until one came my way. had there been any warning signs, i would have walked with no hesitation.
