Hi everyone!

So lately I've been watching a show called Taboo. Its a National Geographic series which covers a lot of topics that are taboo in various cultures across the world. Now a few of the episodes are on body modifications, a perfect body, fat acceptance etc. Watching these episodes made me realize how many people undergo body modifications of some sort including tattoos or cosmetic surgery.

I was wondering what people think about body modification. I personally am completely against any kind of modification whether it is tattoos or liposuction or botox etc. In my opinion we shouldn't tamper with the structural and physical aspects of our body due to its complexity. There are so many risks involved with body modifications that it seems like a very high price to pay for your health. I saw some really extreme examples of modifications in different cultures as well which was quite interesting since it really shows how each culture has their own view of a "perfect body". What do you guys think about modifications? What really is the definition of a "perfect body"?

I agree completely!

I think it's probably either low self-esteem or vanity.

I say that as a guy who has had both plastic surgery and liposuction, and I am in the latter camp.

I have a tattoo. I think whatever a person does to make themselves feel better about their body is fine by me.

Correct real flaws, leave the other alone.

My old man had lotsa tats and I always thought they looked tacky, and they guarantee identification. I have a small wine spot on my ass and that makes me crazy.

And all this time I thought it was the lead paint chips your momma used to pack in your school lunches.

Yes I do...I know that is body modification as well. I guess I should rephrase my earlier statement...I don't like the idea of body modification other than pierced ears. I don't have any tattoos or other piercings so maybe it would be better to say that I'm not completely against body modification since I do have pierced ears but I don't like the idea of piercing anything else or going under the knife or tattoos.

That's because of the cultural norms that you grew up with. If you grew up in a society that valued scarification over piercing you would think that was normal.

That was brought up a lot in the series...some of the extreme cases of modification had something called Body Dismorphic Disorder where an underlying psychological problem was causing them to think that a specific part of their body was deformed.

Ah yes that's true..that was also a major point in the episodes. I just find it really interesting that in some cultures filing of the teeth and making them sharper is considered beautiful even though it reduces the life of your teeth.

Circus freak isn't normal, its simply popular with shitheads like you.

I don't really mind other people getting tattoos or piercings either...I guess you could equate modification like liposuction to a strict exercise regime since both are trying to achieve the same result. I just wonder why you would want to go through with it despite of the risks.

I agree with that..it is important to correct real debilitating flaws.

Me? I'm an uptight priss who won't even wear hoop earrings. I just think its arbitrary to point out what our particular culture thinks about the standards of beauty in another culture. We might as well just make the statement "huh, people are different" and call it a day.

Hmm that makes sense I guess...as I was saying every culture is different and hence their standard of beauty is different. There are villages and tribes where being larger is considered to be beautiful since it symbolizes good health and wealth.

I have no problems at all with people choosing to have modifications done to themselves.
It's their body - pretty much the ONLY thing they have complete autonomy over.
I may not like or agree with what they do, but that's my problem not theirs.

Your body, your choice.

Yup that's true. But would you consider body modifications to fit a so called ideal in our society?I guess that brings up the question of what the hell this ideal is. Too many questions and not enough answers :p

Pierced ears only, for women. No other piercings. No tats.

I don't care what men do.

You had plastic surgery and decided to stick with that nose anyway?

:nana:

I shattered my nose back in 1992. It was a bit misshapen from boxing to begin with. I had a fiberglass insert replace the cartiledge. The insert has the consistency of a mini-blind slat. My nose is quite straight and functional now, Mister Savage, thankewverymuch!

Life is short, it's your body, and it doesn't affect anyone else.

If it makes you feel good, do it.

Just don't be naive or delusional that if you go overboard with any of it that it's probably going to alter your employment options and the general public's perception of you. Not saying that's how it should be, just saying that's how it is.
