National Interest - Moral judgements.

Should Moral judgements ever be allowed to skew the National interest in determining Foreign Policy.

I believe that National interests should always have primacy, even if the result is very negative for other countries and peoples interests.

For example I think that there is an arguable case for acting on the basis that it is in the National interest of the USA to preserve and maintain the current conflict in the Middle East. From a moral point of view all parties to the conflict of every description are pretty obnoxious. Perhaps the best outcome for the immediate future is to ensure that they are fully occupied in fighting and killing each other - but making sure that no - one wins. Any thoughts?

Let us suppose that the world's nation-states are in a Hobbesian or Lockean State of Nature with respect to each other. (They are not really entirely so, nowadays, what with international law and international associations and treaties and things, but let us suppose.)

Is morality really entirely irrelevant even in the State of Nature?

The United States had such a policy and it was working pretty well before the Iraq-Iran standoff went off balance. Of course it was what Britain's whole plan was about in partitioning the region after WWI, but that eventually unraveled and completely fell apart when the State of Israel was permitted to plop down in the middle of everything rather than being given Bavaria or some such German region.

I think we should stand for morality. The Middle East will not suddenly become peaceful place if we are moral or immoral. The conflicts they carry will continue to fester and fragment the region.

I think we should gift Iraq a few A-10's and let them bomb the shit out of ISIL, but after X years of fucking around in their politics we haven't helped much at all.
