I think this link gives some insight as to why the Military takes an oath containing a ref to God. An oath is a promise to do something and swearing by God is a self damnation should you swear falsely. I don't view it as being political or particularly religious.

I would not want any religion to control my life, especially if I was a very religious Republican watching the secular liberalists wanting to control every aspect of his life and business, what to eat, drink, or use recreationally, what his children will be taught in the way of societal morality, who want to disarm him, fill his community full of potheads, besmirch and belittle his military service, micromanage his business, run him off his land with regulation in the name of Gaia, and it goes on and on, the list of things that Liberals are willing to torment him with in the name of his own best interest, not the least of which is his health care and relationship to his doctor.

I can't imagine at all why there would be some push-back to that agenda.
