This is intended to be a place for people to argue endlessly about meaningless anecdotal data-points pertaining to localized, time-specific weather events.

NASA said:
The difference between weather and climate is a measure of time. Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere "behaves" over relatively long periods of time.

Even on the new and improved, highly politicized version of NASA, the above is a direct quote of their heavily propagandized version of explaining the difference between a weather event and actual differences in climate.

I live in a State with different climate zones depending on elevation. Those zones vary over time in a cyclical way. As does every other region of the earth. We might have a particularly dry winter in the mountains, and then have it flood the desert during monsoon season. The average of the precipitation in the two or more unrelated zones could be tracked and graphed and would mean nothing.

NASA is promoting the idea that "climate" is something that looks at weather patterns over a 30 year period. Personally, I think that is far too short a span, but for our purposes here, lets assume anything over 30 years of data might be relevant to climate change and anything less than that is a weather discussion.

I propose a different analogical model:

Weather is to climate what money is to income. Weather and income streams are highly dynamic systems.

I could see that working on micro and macro levels. The M1 supply versus GDP. Both are influenced by inflation, the measurement of which is subject to endless debate.

Another perfectly suited thread for the Politics Board.

None more so than yours on the entireley politcized "science" of the recently rebranded "climate change."

So, does Lits favorite, extremely ameteurish meterologist have any weather to report today or was this just your trademark snark-and-run?

Do you have any data at all to support your "ice age cometh" view?

Here in Tampa, we haven't had snow since 1977, but most winters we used to at least get frosts and freezes. I haven't seen a frozen puddle in at least three years now.

I wish we could get some rain right now, to wash away all this disgusting green oak pollen, it's been all over everything for weeks. But I suppose the oaks bloom in a dry month for a reason.

Excellent. This is just the sort of anecdotal weather reporting I am talking about. Might be part of a trend, might not be. If it is a trend, this report tells us nothing about the cause.

Good stuff, actually.

About 12 years ago a cold front came way farther south than typical and I had some nice pictures of snow on cactus at less than 1500 feet elevation. Enough to make snowballs with.

We are hear to talk about the weather. If you want to talk about actual scientific certitude about future climatic events, "Climate continues to change" would be a good place for you to report what you learned.

Be a fun change to see you googling for knowledge instead of simply confirmation bias.

Now, off you go!

This winter may have brought a deep freeze to much of the northeastern United States — including record-breaking snowfall in Boston — but it was the planet's warmest winter on record, climate scientists announced yesterday (March 18).

The average global temperature from December to February was 1.42 degrees Fahrenheit (0.79 degrees Celsius) higher than the 20th-century average of 53.8 degrees F (12.1 degrees C), according to a newly released report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Climatic Data Center.

These stats make December 2014 to February 2015 the warmest winter since record keeping began in 1880, surpassing the previous record set in 2007 by 0.05 degrees F (0.03 degrees C).

Uh, oh. Don't do that, quantifying the amount of change always hurts frodo's feelings. Almost an entire degree and a half? Brrrrrrr.

I was (and continue to be) cold this winter.....so how in the world is this the warmest winter on record??

Summer never ended west of the Rockies....it had a slight wet month in the PNW but for the most part everyone from SF to Seattle is wondering wtf is going on with the weather....it's been summer for like 5 god damn years.

And everything south of us is still cities in the desert....except now water is short and they are about to be ultra fucked down there this summer if some more rain doesn't blow in and toss some last min snow up on the sierras/soak the valley.

Oh yea and M'uricuhas food supply? Bout to get it right in the ass....save your peso's folks b/c when Shasta rez runs dry on july food is going to get stupid expensive nation wide.

It rained today. God is ready to cleanse the earth from wickedness.

Nicely done.

That hypothesis is just as supported by a single data point as global warming is by a record high temp recorded in Des Moines on a July Tuesday.

Likewise global warming is disproved by a snowball thrown in the halls of congress.

Except Global Warming proponents aren't talking about a single data point, they're talking about long term trends. It's the denialists who insist that it's all a hoax because it's cold this week.

Snowed today, the earth is cooling. Will be hot this summer, earth is overheating. Fax.
