The Official Author's Hangout 2015 April Fool's Day Contest Support Thread

This is my first time entering a contest here. My entry is at over 18,000 reads and 235 votes after ten days, which seemed great to me at first. Then I began looking through the other entries, and i was surprised when i saw how many more readers and votes some of the categories draw.

I'd love to know which categories are the biggest draw. My lazy guess, without bothering to click around, would be Incest.

My impression, based on incomplete data and unscientific methods, was that Loving Wives and Incest/Taboo appear to have the largest audiences, with Non-consent a relatively close third, at least with respect to the categories and the stories therein at which I looked.

Another slide into home base...

I hit submit. Barely had time to line- and copy-edit. And I did challenge myself with this one, a romantic stroker written from the male POV (thanks to all the gentlemen who contributed to my "How does it feel..." thread). I also tried for Pilot's challenge, but didn't quite make it - failed on transvestite and gay male, but it does have lesbian sex in it, another new one for me. All in all, I'm pleased I made it. I hope it does as well as the last one. Whew...

That is some crazy exposure: 931 votes and 41 comments in one day?! I'm in the 400 vote range now after many weeks but that is unprecendended for me so I can't complain. At least it's nice to be able to insulate your score from the 1-bombs by having a high vote count. Loving Wives, tough crowd, but they must have a pretty big readership?

Yeah, lot of read and votes. Here is the latest. Won't bea day till morning.

She Fooled Me I just wanted to do what I thought was right.

Hope to end up with at least 4.00. I'm just happy people are still reading and voting on stories. Quite a few comments too. Not all good, that's for sure. LOL

Welcome to the contest! I remember your "how does it feel" thread, I'm sure that you'll have a fine male POV stroker to show for it. :)

Loving Wives is also the fun category. :D

Submissions are now closed (sez my clock) and I didn't get one in. Three mostly-done contest prospects sit in unresolved limbo; maybe next year. IRL it's been rough here lately. I look forward to Summer Lovin' or whatever contest is next; my head might be clarified by then. Or brainwashed. Or occupied by a six-week USA Southwest tour, cacti & tequila & cameras & lenses. I guess I should finish my stories before I leave. Anyway, good luck to all entrants. May you all be above average.

Apparently so. Out of curiosity I checked out DG Hears comments and...yikes, what a freak show! The Loving Wives savages are so intriguing to me. I'm tempted to try and give them a fresh carcass (story) to chew on just to see what happens.

It's one of the fun parts of writing loving wives. When I first started writing back in 2005 (I just write for the fun of it) I was surprised at how angry readers got. After awhile it just became funny to me. I wrote romance and everyone thought is was me in the story and wished me luck.

I developed a pretty thick skin over the years and write what comes into this old head of mine. I actully get the best comments from non-erotic, who would have guessed. Thank you for at least reading the comments. If you ever get bored come back and check out some more. My story 'Zoea' has the most comments, it actually makes for a fun read. (the comments that is) LOL

The comments on those stories are train wrecks.

At this point I wonder how many are now 'contrived' to be more over the top than the last and to keep up the tradition and reputation of lits most volatile category.

Just as some authors are going out of their way to piss off the crackpots there, I think in return the regular trolls have turned their nastiness into a "top this comment" game.

I only have two there, one a burn the bastard story...the second one so over the top it was pretty much a parody.

I got a lot of spew and nastiness, but for some reason these two short simple comments have always made me laugh.

Good stuff! I'll definitely give this category a shot. I can only hope that I'm as lucky as DG Hear to get an abortion related comment :)

Well the score to my mother/son story is still a lot lower than many of my others, but it just made it past the two hundred favs mark so hopefully will at least get me some more 'attention' here.

ha! i bet you can't beat a 2.71 score (lower, i mean.) :D

actually, you win. i just remembered laurel moved the piece to humor and satire.

Mine could make a case for being there, it was that over the top and meant as a parody, but in order to understand parody one has to.....have more brains than LW trolls.

Huzzah, my contest entry and first-ever story on Lit is live. Probably don't have a ghost of a shot at the win, but I'm excited about this!

Congratulations! I know the feeling you get when you post those first few stories. Best of luck to you.

I just read your warning to your story....That was hilarious I think you actually shamed the readership of the category you posted it in:D

Seeing I personally loathe that category I find it even funnier.

"If you like this...shame on you!" Awesome.

Yeah, well, the "shame" thing kind of falls under the category of "ha ha only serious" for me. ;) I don't really judge people with NC kinks, since obviously I am one... but it's like indulging in any kind of vice, it's a very bad sign if you're ever under the illusion that it's actually good for you.

So, I'm reading the stories in the April Fool's Day contest, and I noticed that several stories have no connection to April Fool's day. Am I missing something here?

I noticed that, too. I've just refrained from voting on those ones for the time being; some of them actually aren't bad as smut but I don't understand why they're contest entries.

Perhaps you have limiting ideas of what is required? If someone's playing the fool in the story or one character says another one is and the action covers April 1st, that should be enough. It shouldn't have to be just an embarrassing trick played on someone on April 1st, or the collection would be deadly dull. That said, I don't remember a single one of these contests that I didn't scratch my head over what the connection was between one or more of the stories and the stated theme.

All of mine did, but keep in mind what the rules are.

themes: Stories (humorous or otherwise) of surprise meetings, humor, tricks, trick endings, and other themes of deception, chance, and/or misunderstandings (happy or otherwise)

My mother/son story was about a wrong hypnosis.

The Bondage Wife was about a woman who thought she was going to see a therapist, but it was actually something else.

The words "April Fool's" don't need to be there. And there doesn't need to be a twist. The themes of the contest are broad.
