this is something that's come up a lot on lit.

it's part of why abuse victims get blamed, victims of police violence get vilified. it reminds me of my grandmother telling my mother, who had just found out she had cervical cancer, that it was her own fault for being a slut. and it's lazy, because if you deny the issues then you don't need to address them, and you certainly don't need to pay for them.

Your life is what you make it. Yeah some people are born with advantages and disadvantages. But it's up to you if you are going to accept it or do something about it. I cannot shed a tear for the pity, because I pity myself. And I know I'm the only person to blame for me living this why. So I cannot pity you because you are the blame for the way you are living. Life isn't fair, but it's what you make it. It's a cold world, that's why you got to bundle up.

This is precisely why I've always told the Ruglets that life wasn't fair. I hadn't seen the studies, but it makes perfect sense.

Also, how horrible would life be if we actually did get what we deserve? Pretty much everyone has done something awful at one time or other.

Reading into the article it would appear that those continuously evangelizing the notion of an unjust world are the root cause of all this 'victim blaming' and racism and such.

The author and the studies he has cited all leave this alternate causation open for discussion.

Both the 'crusader' and the 'blame the victim' type are miserable people to be around, so don't be around them.

This is off topic to some extent but have you seen this dolf?

I love this commercial and think it's very powerful.

You may like it too.

i know you asked dolf, but i wanted to reply to this as well: no, not seen it before and like the message - could have been made even stronger, imo, and followed through with footage of women athletes running whilst playing football, racing, playing tennis and running for a ball, that kind of thing. there's an ad currently being aired in britland that i believe dolf already linked to before: it shows women of all shapes, ages and sizes exercising and enjoying themselves. nothing puts so many women off exercising more than not looking like some model in training gear. in effect, it's normalising exercise for every woman, every day (she says, sat on the bed eating dinner).

And when someone shoots you in the back and you wind up in a wheelchair out on the street, remember you said all this.

Everyone who says "life isn't fair, deal with it" is someone who lives a life of privilege.

Every last damned one of those vile people are people who haven't buried a child due to a childhood cancer or other unavoidable illnesses.

Absolutely none of those idiots have lost an entire family to a major earthquake that struck without warning.

Not one of these folks ever had to bury a spouse who got T-boned by a drunk driver.

None of those mother fuckers got thrown into the street as a kid after their family died.

"Life isn't fair, deal with it" is never spoken by any civilized person who appreciates a civilized society. It is the apathetic slogan of first world privileged shitheads who haven't had to deal with any more adversity in their life than their fucking Xbox giving them the red ring of death in the middle of hunting Al Qaeda in an urban combat video game. It is the creed of animals who live in the jungle, or who belong there.

I like this post.

Life is not fair.

Even God acknowledges this fact.

Everyday alive is a gift...even on bad days in intense pain there are loved ones to be called and share past moments of joy or to make amends so others can move on..there is a beautiful natural world to see just out the window..we have the world at our finger tips thru the internet... for at least every.person on this board life is a great gift...an open box for you to fill...unfortunately most want to shit in their own box and in others too...

I used to work with a woman who had 5 sisters and they were all health food, exercise junkies and had been for decades.
When one of them got breast cancer, they couldn't believe it because they had always taken such good care of themselves, and also thought of themselves as models of good living.
It was a very rude awakening for them. I don't think any of them thought they were blaming the victim but they had been for years.

Very well put. Thank you.

Life isn't fair or unfair. The universe doesn't give a damn about any of us, or all of us, for that matter. Not one way or the other. Not in the least. Shit happens. Or it doesn't. What happens to you, or to me, or to anyone, is not that big a deal. Not in the grand scheme of things. Not even a little.

And a third *like* here. It's the bullshit of the American dream, which says that billionaires deserve their good fortune: the necessary corollary of that is that the minimum-wage night shift cleaner equally deserves his or her bad fortune. No politician in the 'land of opportunity' is ever honest enough to say that. For most people life is like playing roulette - you may win a round or two but in the long run the odds are stacked in favour of the house. That's no coincidence.
