Isolated Blurt Thread

So I have recently found out that due to changes to PA state laws, if I wish to be a volunteer for things at my kids' school, I will need a state criminal background check as well as a federal criminal background check. This will include fingerprints, a fee, and will be good for three years.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS.

Our Scouting group would pay the fee for the background check for any Scouter who stayed in the whole year. We fundraised for it, so it wouldn't cost people to volunteer.

The fees and the process were a source of disgruntlement for us, too, though we did see the point, generally.

Similarly, our "head office" generally paid for background checks.
Personally, I take the view that if they want the damn checks, they can damned well pay for them! (It's a rip-off, anyway ).

And not that effective in the UK. Child abusers have passed the checks by lying. Doh!

I see the point generally, too, but I think this is overkill. I think it's a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist. Yes, I want my kids and their classmates to be safe. But it's not like we've had a run of security problems that require addressing. And like I said, this isn't the school's idea; they have to comply with the law. And as far as fundraising, we fundraise so much anyway I'd just rather pay the fee.

I will be curious to see what information we get at the home/school meeting tonight.

A 'security check' is even worse.

Years ago there used to be 'Negative Vetting' and 'Positive Vetting'.

Negative checked the records to see that there was nothing adverse recorded like convictions or arrests.

Positive was much more labour-intensive and included interviews with previous employers, neighbours, school teachers etc. looking for hints of anything adverse.

All the Cambridge Spies were Positively Vetted.

Reminds me of "Are you now, or have you ever been . . . "

Thinking seriously about moving to Floida. Not sure if they have a river down there. I might be lost.

They have the St, Johns River which is the only river in the Northern hemisphere that flows north. Pretty place and fairly warm most of the year.

The gators won't be the problem. The mosquitoes will carry you off.

Or maybe the liberated pythons.

Nobody told the Willamette (Oregon), the San Joaquin (California), the San Pedro (Sonora-Arizona), the MacKenzie (NW Territories), the Grivalva (Mexico), and probably a few other rivers that they should not flow north. And those are just North America. Let's see, there's also the Nile (Sudan-Egypt-etc), the Ob, Lena, and other rivers draining to the Arctic Ocean (Siberia), the Oder and others draining to the Baltic (Germany-Poland), and likely a few more.

Other than that, everything I know about Florida I learned from John MacDonald and Carl Hiaasen. And Flipper.

Rivers in the north normally flow south and rivers in the southern hemisphere normally flow north. That is the nature of things. The St.Johns is the largest river that flows the wrong way in the north and the Amazon is the largest in the south.

That's the way I've always read it in the past.

Amazon flows west-to-east; it's mouth is right at the equator, so it's barely southern hemispheric. I think the Nile (entirely northern hemisphere) and MacKenzie, Ob and Lena (into the Arctic Ocean) are rather larger rivers than the St Johns.

Ain't no "wrong way". Rivers flow downhill. When topography rises in the south, rivers flow north, regardless of hemisphere.

That's the way I've always read it in the past.
Besides maps, I read lists of major rivers (like here). The St Johns ain't there.

You didn't watch Miami Vice?
Nash Bridges was better -- but I'm a San Franciscan so I'm prejudiced. There's a reason BULLITT wasn't shot in Miami, eh?

Could that be because SF is nearer to Hollywood that Miami ?
Just "travelling expenses" thought, yu' understand ?

FRENCH CONNECTION wasn't shot in any of those places. Coincidence, or... ??

As for travelin' expenses: the market in the county seat, 20 miles away, sells bags of Dole cole slaw for US$1.19 each. At the local market, 1/2 mile away, they're US$1.99 each, or 60% more. I asked the proprietor about the price differential. She stared into space and said, "Freight. That's the only excuse I can think of. Freight."

Just watched "Life Itself," the documentary on Roger Ebert. It made me cry (I think that makes two movies at which I've cried). So now we're watching an episode of Graham Norton before bed...

He was, in my humble opinion, the best movie critic there ever was. I'll have to check out that documentary.
Do you think he would give it 2 thumbs up?
:D

I'd like to think he would. :) He participated in it, but unfortunately died before it was finished. The ending was hard to take, what can I say? :)

I watched it on CNN, not sure where else you can see it right now. It was on some VOD and streaming services but I'm not sure it still is.

I have been trying Tinder for a couple of months now. The first month and a half resulted in ZERO matches. Then when I finally started getting matches the only replies I got were women whoring out pics on other sites. Now I'm getting numbers from people right before they unmatch me. I have no idea what the fuck is going on, but I get the feeling I only attract fake accounts.

Why am I so cursed with women?
