Really? But Mrs Beeton swears by it. :(

in an emergency, butter can help in cases of tar stuck to skin as it aids removal of the tar.

grease on a new burn helps keep heat IN the tissue, doing more damage. cold water, des, cold water - and for up to 20 minutes!

once the skin is cooled, cling film is about your best bet to cover the burn in to keep out infection before hospital treatment. if the burn's small, like dolf's, just cool it and let it be. well, ok, you can cover it with a sterile gauze if you want, but just don't put butter on a burn. really. it can create an ideal breeding ground for infection. i'll shut up now.

No, thank you! Clearly I need to update my training. Please tell me leeches and cupping are still OK, or I'm going to be awfully short of things to say in my talk to the WI.

if you are not truly biting your tongue very, very hard, des, get a modern first aid book - one that shows the differences in treating adults and children. it's important when you've a tot, k?

No, sorry, I was joking. I know about cold water and sterilized bandages - I've even done a St John's ambulance course and successfully resuscitated a plastic torso using CPR...:D

I was just listening to that on The World at One! As you say, wonderful Colin Pillinger will never know. I shall be growing my mutton chops in tribute.

It's the Friday of a 3-day weekend. I'm wondering what I'm going to get into this weekend. The weather is to be near 50 and sunny, so it may involve something outside.

the covers are so tempting.

a beautiful day needs fresh air and an outdoor stretch.
