While putzing around on the net today, I came across an ad for this hoodie:

Normally, I'm a fan of Teespring, and I've bought several tshirts from them. But this... this bothers me. A lot. I feel it's incredibly flippant of a very serious issue that affects many of our veterans. Moreover, many don't get the support they need to deal with it, because our VA system is woefully inadequate. Hell, our mental health system overall is woefully inadequate.

I know there's a saying along the lines of better to laugh than to cry, and there's likely something I'm missing. But it just strikes me as astonishingly dismissive.

As a combat vet and a retired psychologist I long ago concluded PTSD is a disorder of convenience for drunks, malingerers, and other parasites. Theyre non-hacker cons jerking tears and cash from fools.

If PTSD were real you'd expect it to be common within groups who experienced real trauma...say German Jews of the Nazi Era or POWs of the Vietnam Era. Didn't happen. I knew one Marine with PTSD, he was traumatized after he killed a close friend during combat in Vietnam. All the others I knew fabricated military service and combat service to justify their addictions and dysfunctional lifestyles.

I don't like it but have several friends with PTSD that would wear it. It would suit their dark sense of humor.

my brother-in-law suffers from PTSD and is in recovery for alcoholism, like many of our veterans who saw combat. i have a real problem with that hoodie too. it marginalizes a legitimate and significant societal ill.

I think that's a bit insensitive and I wish it would be taken down, but I wouldn't stop someone from buying it.

I am a vet and I work with a lot of veterans (volunteer at a local support group) and it's a tough one for me. First, I get very protective and defensive of my brothers and sisters under arms when it comes to people profiting from them or mocking them. That said, I think ever member of our group, myself included, would say that one of the reasons we volunteered to do the work others would not was to preserve the right of our fellow citizens -and yes, those in other nations- to say things that piss us off.

Next time youre at the PTSD Pity Party tell the gang I say theyre pussies and losers.

So as a therapist you preyed on these people to unload them of their government handouts?

I tossed them out the door. Not once could we ever validate their military service, they go to the VA hospital if theyre real veterans and have zero insurance. Every single one of the PTSD applicants was a fraud. PTSD is the chic disorder that replaced back injury for gold bricks and bums.

It's not a matter of whether or not they have a right to sell/buy it. Of course they do. Free speech and all that. That said, out of decency and respect, some lines should not be crossed. IMO, this is one of them. That's all.

I've always wondered if in the minds of many people the concept of free speech means disrespect and indecency. Yes, people have the right be asses; it doesn't make it right (like being honest means being rude).

Just an observation, that is all. :).

Salmon Rushdie says their aint no BUT after FREE SPEECH. Youre an imbecile.

Just read an article about PTSD...real PTSD...its the new name for SHELL SHOCK. That is, PTSD was always about brain damage caused by close proximity to exploding artillery shells tho no one ever contemplated the effects of gun fire on the guys firing the cannons.

That said, what in hell is the logic that connects artillery fire to losers with addictions and tender feelings and thin skin?

Hmmm, I dunno. I might meander around his other posts and see of they spread the same misery as these ones. If so, I'm gonna report his sorry ass.

I wouldn't waste your time. You'll only find terrible spelling, posts intended to aggravate or offend, and more examples of a miserable person punching well above their weight class, as far their as abilities and knowledge are concerned.

His posts like the ones here confirm, beyond any doubt, that Lit’s ol’ mythomaniac knows as much about psychology, as Dennis Rodman knows about international diplomacy.

Ol’ Farty Pants should stick to his ‘maters and manure. Using a 2nd-hand store Psychology 101 textbook to level your ratty recliner does not qualify you as psychologist, retired or otherwise.

Most folks here just ignore him, or have him on ignore. Even other misogynists find him hackneyed, don’t believe any of his anecdotes, and think his provocative postings foolish and mundane.

He’s a brash, old, lonely man who finds enjoyment in the pulling of internet pigtails, and thinks arrogance = intelligence.

If only he would find his misplaced ear trumpet, he could hear us all laughing at him.

DSM 5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Volume 5(which is used by all psychiatrists in this country to diagnose and treat mental disorders) lists PTSM under the Traumatic and Stressor Related Disorders. So you say that all the psychiatrists that wrote DSM 5 and all that use it are completely wrong and you are right. I think that you are the loser here.

So getting back to the OP.....while I am a vet, I do not have any diagnosis. I can see the dark humor in that product...but also see where it may offend. Ranger Up has some awesome gear..not as edgy.

Well, I've joined the club and stuck him on ignore. Life's too short to listen to douchenozzles.
