I have a battery that's been acting up lately. I'm keeping an eye on it.

This is the season for them to croak. They don't like cold.

Apparently, Battery Terminal Cancer is bright green. I'm waiting for the biopsy. Could be fungal I suppose.

A can of Coke will make that bit go away.

But it's sometimes a symptom of other ailments.

How old is the battery in question?

Back in the day before the 'cranking power on steroids' batteries hit the shelf I used to go through a seasonal routine.

In the fall I'd bring the battery up to full charge, empty the acid out and refill it with new acid. Generally added 2-3 years to the batteries life.

Don't know. There's no date that I can see. It was kind enough to get me home and die quietly in the driveway.

I don't think I ever got 4 years out of a battery in the removable cap days, but it was fun to play with the specific gravity checker-gizmo.

That was thoughtful of it.

How long have you have the car it died in?

We had a battery died outside the shops, but the car did a complete freak out: lights going on and off, doors locking/unlocking, dash went mental. It was actually quite frightening, like it was possessed. I had to stay with the car till we got towed away

Is that why you're so sticky?

Yeah, because most folks just topped the battery off with whatever water was laying around. Most tap water contains sodium and calcium that reacted with the acid and coated the plates with bad shit. If you used distilled water and completely changed out the acid every year you'd get a lot more life out of the battery.

Today they make them with paper thin plates spaced really close together. Great cranking power but if they ever fully discharge the plates warp and short out. Like H-P printers, if it quits working throw it in the trash, no recovery possible.

Too cold and bored to be sticky that time, though our mechanic fella is quite hot, in a charming older man way. He could bump start me anytime :D

My mechanic is Mexican/American. He's not very good or attractive, but he's cheap and available.

Good one.

I had a bit of sticker shock when I bought a new one a few months ago.

Bite the bullet and buy a new one.

Fucking miserable things.

But, you gotsta have one or the car does nothing.

If the terminals are corroded, try brushing them off with a mixture of baking soda and water, reconnect and try the started, to make your you don't have a simple continuity problem.

I have a charger thing to put on it but that didn't work. It's all fixed. Just throw money.
